Thursday, October 27, the Wall Street Journal reports that Google’s YouTube is set to announce “Video Channels” next week. There has been much gamer buzz about Google’s million dollar outreach for creative talent to make YouTube the destination for ultimate creative viewing.
How or if that will affect placement of some of the strongest current YouTube partners, such as the ever popular Machinima Inc., is unknown. But obviously, with a whiff of the seduction of past wins in their nostrils, this Google YouTube expansion may certainly have been spurred by the hope of reproducing in new channels the strong records of success already shown by partners such as Machinima Inc.
WSJ noted that:
“Several other partners for YouTube’s new initiative, which is trying to upend the way entertainment is created, already create popular content on the video site, people familiar with the matter said. Those include Machinima Inc., which creates content for young men.”
In addition , it was revealed in the U.S. Online Video Rankings recently published by ComScore, the unsurprising news that Machinima stats were stable and holding, but more than that “Gamers Watch 61.9 Minutes of Machinima Every Month”. Would Machinima Inc. like to increase that amount to three hours a month, maybe even one hour a week?
No doubt, but in the face of what may be heavy competition heading its way, it’ll be interesting to see if Google’s newest expansion pulls from current viewership shareor increases it. The expansion may be a winner for Google YouTube, but will it be a loser for Machinima?
Dallas gamers are skeptical – first the Google’s new partners will have to show us what they’re bringing to the game.
