Retired FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala will be conducting free soccer clinics in the DFW area of Texas. This is a great opportunity to get your kids on the field with professional soccer players.
Who is Dario Sala?
Dario Sala is a retired professional goalkeeper with 17 years experience in South American, Europe, and North American premiere leagues and international tournaments. Has played in roughly 500 official games, including 30 international matches.
Sala didn’t start out as a soccer player. Born into a working class family in Cordoba, he aspired to be a soldier and attended a top military prep school when he was 11. On weekends, he came home to sell churros with his family outside local soccer stadiums. Sala played team handball and earned a place on Argentina’s national handball team as a right winger.
After a stint as a lieutenant in the army, Sala went to law school. To get free drinks, he bet the professional soccer players that he could stop their shots from outside the 18-yard box. In 1995, a scout signed Sala as a reserve player for San Lorenzo. At San Lorenzo, Sala was coached by Hector Baley, goalkeepr for the 1978 Argentine World Cup.
Sala was signed by FC Dallas in 2005, where he excelled as a goal keeper. During the 2006 season, he earned 28 starts, 93 saves, a 1.24 GAA, and 14 wins, leading the team to a first place finish. During his career, Sala posted career bests in minutes played with 2,520 and shutouts with seven. He finished the season with a 1.32 goals against average, helping lead the team to the fourth-best goal differential (+4) in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Sala retired in 2010 and is now working as a player agent.
Now, Dario Sala runs soccer clinics for underprivileged children in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as part of the Chevy Youth Soccer program. On his website, Sala said,
“I started the clinics because I believed I had a responsibility to help grow the beautiful game in my adopted homeland. Last year, I received a Hometown Hero award for my work on the clinics and it was so special because it reinforced how I think of Dallas: My home. Even though I no longer wear a MLS jersey, I still embrace that responsibility and want to give back to the community that has given me so much.”
