The Texas Rangers could have traded Derek Holland last year to get Zach Greinke, but thankfully they didn’t. Holland took huge steps forward this year as a pitcher. He decreased is ERA and WHIP, increased is K:BB ratio, and dominated the 2nd half of the season (9-1, 3.06 ERA).
In Yahoo! fantasy sports, Holland finished ranked around 130 as a pitcher. Which means he should be undervalued going into 2012.
What may be coming is, for lack of a better word, greatness.
Here are the player lines for
Player 1: 63 starts, 27-22 record, 393 innings, 4.73 ERA, 323 strikeouts, 138 walks, 416 hits
Player 2: 72 starts, 23-39 record, 431 innings, 4.29 ERA, 194 strikeouts, 136 walks, 428 hits
Player 1 is Derek Holland. Player 2 is future Hall-of-Famer Tom Glavine
Glavine made his biggest leap at age 25. That year he won 20 games, had a 2.55 ERA, and won the Cy Young award.
Holland turned 25 this past Sunday.
Don’t expect a Cy Young season from Holland, but as the lefty keeps improving, and if can cut his walk rate a little bit (as pitchers do as they mature), 18 wins, 200 k’s, and a 3.5 ERA is not out of the question for next year.
What do you think? Is Holland an ace in the making? Or another talented Rangers arm that gets wasted?
