One of the cool things in Diablo 3 is the level of customization you can utilize for your character. You only get six active ability (and three passive) slots which are unlocked throughout the game to use, but there are dozens of spells to choose from.
Further allowing for customization is the runestone system. There are five different runestones and each one alters the spell to a certain degree. This technically gives you five spells in one, but you can only have one runestone per spell. Here are some of the more fun sounding options for Diablo 3’s Barbarian.
Spell: Leap Attack
A pretty self explanatory spell. The Barbarian leaps through the air and generates fury (the Barbarian’s resource needed to activate certain spells) if it hits any enemies. However, if you add the Indigo runestone the impact of the leap sends enemies into surrounding enemies doing damage. Adding an Alabaster runestone gives you a 70% chance to stun enemies upon impact.
Another fury generating spell, the Barbarian swings in an arc and hits multiple enemies for damage. An Alabaster runestone gives enemies a 70% chance to explode and deal more damage to surrounding enemies, which sounds pretty disgusting, but totally awesome.
Spell: Hammer of the Ancients
A fury spender, HotA is a simple weapon spell, calling forth a giant hammer to do damage. Toss an Obsidian runestone, however, and the impact also adds a damage over time aspect to the spell. An Indigo runestone creates a small shockwave in front of the Barbarian, increasing the damage.
Spending fury, the Barbarian spins multiple times, dealing damage to enemies. If you want to turn it into a whirlwind of fire, though, add a Crimson runestone. Or if you want to toss out mini-whirlwinds as well, add an Indigo runestone.
Spell: Call of the Ancients
A pretty sweet spell by itself, the Barbarian summons three ancient spirits to fight by his side for 15 seconds. Throwing a Golden runestone onto the spell massively increases the duration, bringing it up to 55 seconds, while an Indigo runestone increases their damage and armor.
Spell: Wrath of the Beserker
Lastly, this spell increases the critical hit, attack and move speed and dodge chance stats of the Barbarian for 15 seconds. Adding a Crimson runestone will add an increased damage stat, but an Alabaster will make enemies explode if you kill them while WotB is active. The unfortunate, exploding enemy will deal 300% AOE weapon damage within 15 yards.
So there you go. A very small preview of the a couple of Barbarian spells and their customizations. It doesn’t stop there, though. Weapons, armor and color dyes all add to the experience. Diablo 3 is shaping up to be a one of a kind experience.
