Papillion, NE – If you are involved in the world of Facebook and dogs, you undoubtedly saw the frightening image that circulated like wildfire…
Cheese cubes laced with nails which were reported to be a “new trend” in dog parks…a trend which supposedly set out to harm dogs which were visiting those parks.
Last week, my own mother sent me the “warning” which she had seen on Facebook.
I sent her an email back letting her know that the viral image and warning had been determined to be a hoax.
When I replied, I told her that my biggest fear was that the image and warning would reach people who really did want to hurt animals – and I worried that the image would give those individuals a sick idea to try.
Unfortunately, it appears that very thing may in fact have happened to one family in Nebraska.
According to WOWT News, last Thursday, a Papillon family noticed their dog eating something in the yard.
When they investigated, they found cubes of chicken which had been laced with straight pins.
The family rushed their 2 yr-old Toy Poodle, Molly, to the veterinarian where it was discovered that she had already eaten four of the pins.
Thankfully, the veterinarian was able to remove the pins and Molly is none the worse for her frightening experience.
Things could have ended much differently however.
Molly is a small dog – if she had eaten all of the chunks of chicken, she would have ingested many more pins – something which may have fatally damaged her internal organs.
Molly’s family reported the incident to the local police.
Anyone else in this area should be extra vigilant of what their dogs are eating – this frightening incident occurred in Molly’s own backyard.
Sadly, with the way that the cheese/nail image went viral, who knows where copycat abusers may turn up next…what started out as a hoax may wind up being a real issue.
