Disney’s $800 million Aulani Resort had its grand opening this week with a breath taking sunrise ceremony. Of course, there were a lot of characters enjoying the brand new Disney resort on the island of Oahu. After all, this is where Mickey and Minnie (dressed in their vacation outfits) take their vacation- and 3 times a week you can have breakfast with them, hosted by the resort’s “Aunty”. ‘Aunty” invites kids to her beach house where kids will find unique programs for toddlers through teens to learn and experience Hawaii in a way only Disney can do.
Aulani was designed by Walt Disney Imagineers working with Hawaiians to create a place celebrating island culture and history. “We want our guests to ask questions!” explained a Disney cast member at the Aulani’s opening celebration. “We encourage each guest to take one of the interactive self guided cultural tours of the property to help them understand and discover how rich and deep the Hawaiian culture is and how it comes into play at our hotel. It is our responsibility to make the Aulani a place that delivers what every guest expects from a Disney vacation — a perfect family holiday, but it won’t take long before they discover we are much more than a beautiful resort built on a gorgeous lagoon. From the minute they walk into the grand lobby, they see how everything is inspired by the Hawaiian culture. For example, the seven calabash bowls lining the entrance represent the feasts and seven stars of the Pleiades, which were all very important to the Hawaiians. Subtle reminders like this are all around the property. The imagineers worked very hard to develop the Hawaiian philosophy of balance — light and shadow, water and rock, quiet and wild, delicate and course. It is resonated everywhere, whether on the sandy beach, the tropical garden, the blue lagoon, the waterfalls, or in their guest room. From the vantage point of each balcony, it is magnificent to behold, and, even more magical, is how it all changes as day turns to night.”
The resort boasts 21 acres with 359 resort rooms that sleep 4 and 460 villas that can sleep up to 12 guests!
