According to the Dollar General website, starting today there was a terrific sale. The sale is scheduled to run today, 10/25 through 10/31/11. Lawn & Garden, Swim/Summer Toys and Green Dot Home items were to be on sale for 10 cents. In addition to that, there was to be select apparel clearance items for $1.00 or less. But is there really this great sale at every store? And, did it start today for ALL customers?
Unfortunately, many Cleveland shoppers (and shoppers across the country) are finding out that this is not the case. Several people have reported visiting stores immediately upon the store opening only to find very little to nothing on sale. One of my readers, Evelyn, even asked the cashier where the items were and he had no idea what she was talking about. “I just got back from Dollar General and there was not many items left. I asked the cashier if they were having the sale there and he did not now what I was talking about.” You may ask, how does an employee not know what is on sale. I asked myself the same thing and started doing some research online.
One coupon blogger in North Carolina posted on her facebook page last night that the manager of her store allowed her to go in early (the day before) and even posted a picture of her receipt. (Photo slideshow showing Dollar General comments and receipts). Many people are posting on the Dollar General Facebook page with their disappointing experience(s) as well as some people who scored BIG. A sale that was broadcast nationwide is having very different responses as we go from store to store. It makes me wonder if Dollar General Corporate knows what is going on at individual stores.
We all want to save money and as a Cleveland area couponer, I stress that we all remain diligent in our efforts to save money. A group of men and women have even formed a group on Facebook to prevent unethical couponing and improper usage. One of their members stated, “I am BEYOND irritated! Dollar General is having a dime sale tomorrow on all thier summer and garden stuff. One of the bloggers has been bragging today about how great her manager is at her store and saved it all for her in the back in buggies and let her get it today for a dime a piece before the sale starts tomorrow! She has bragged about it all day and posted her pics and receipts. People are actually congratulating her and she should be ashamed! how unfair for everyone else!”
So, is Dollar General REALLY having a sale? In one word, YES! There have been some people blogging about what great deals they got when they visited the store(s) TODAY – not yesterday. Keep in mind, Dollar General has had their summer items on clearance for a few months now and are using this sale to rid themselves of their remaining stock. But, in a vicious circle, we still get back to the original question – is it a sale that is fair to all or a sale to simply bring in customers?
Our use of coupons is a priviledge, not a right. As you visit your local Dollar General store(s) today it is imperative that as customers we remain calm while “educating” our local retailer about the sale their corporate offices are advertising. And, we MUST remain ethical in our purchasing habits as well. And last, but not least, if you did visit a Dollar General today and either found great deals – or didn’t – consider visiting their Facebook page and letting them know. Retailers need to know that we, as couponers, support their business and want to help them – we do not want to take on the job of educating their employees :)
