Looking for a super easy Halloween costume? How about a mischievous little mouse? This cute costume is amazingly easy to make and uses very few materials.
You will need a gray sweatshirt, two pieces of white felt, one piece of gray felt and a plastic headband. If the costume will be for an infant, you can substitute a gray onesie and an elastic headband if needed. Squares of felt can be found at Hobby Lobby, Hancock Fabrics and other craft stores. If buying felt from a bolt, you will need about a quarter of a yard. Another option is to use a thin white cotton fabric, like an old undershirt, instead of white felt.
First cut the bottom cuff off the sweatshirt and set it aside. Next, cut a circle from one piece of white felt and place it in the center of the sweatshirt. Sew the felt in place or attach using heat and bond or hot glue.
To make the ears, trace two sets of circles on the gray felt. The circles should be about 3 inches in diameter. In each set, the circles should be about ¼ inch apart from each other. A cup can be used to trace the circles. Use scissors to cut out the circles, making sure to leave them attached to each other. When done, you will have two shapes that look vaguely like a figure eight.
Next, fold the felt circles over the plastic headband to make the ears. Use a glue stick or heat and bond to secure the circles to each other. Hot glue is too heavy and will make the ears droop. Also, be sure to glue as close the headband as possible. The ears will stand up best if they are glued right against the headband. Once the glue is dry, cut two small circles from the white felt and attach one circle to the front of each ear.
For the finishing touch, use the piece that was cut from the sweatshirt to make a tail. Lay the strip down and fold it lengthwise. The right side of the fabric will be on the inside. Sew the edges and then turn the fabric right side out. Attach this piece to the back of the shirt at waist level. For a no sew option, cut a length of ½ inch wide pink or white ribbon and glue it to the sweatshirt.
To complete the look, pair the shirt with white tights or gray sweatpants, add the ears and a touch of face paint. Black eyeliner is perfect for drawing whiskers and some pink lipstick can be used for a nose.
To make the mouse more girly, add a hairclip to the headband and tie a bow around the tail. If your mouse needs to be a bit manlier, a bowtie can be attached to the collar or the sweatshirt can be worn over a white dress shirt and tie, with the tie lying on top of the sweatshirt.
