For parents who try to stay up to date in their teenager’s life, most can agree it is not an easy task. Here are some simple ideas if you want to have some bonding time with your teen that won’t make them lose their marbles at the thought of spending time with you:
1) Take a trip to Downtown Detroit. Whether it’s to eat in Greektown, check out American vs. Lafayette Coney Island, shop at Eastern Market, go to a ball game, or just experience the city, it is a great way to spend a Saturday. Besides, what could be better “father and son time” than spending a Sunday at Ford Field?
2) Areas around Detroit offer great malls! For some mother-daughter time, check out Partridge Creek, Great Lakes Crossing, or the Birch Run Outlets. A daughter is not going to tell her mother “no” when it comes to shopping! My mother and I always bonded when we would hit the sales on Saturday mornings regardless of if we came home with any purchases.
3) Apple Charlie’s in New Boston is my favorite apple orchard. Your teenager might think it’s “lame” but offering to drive a car full of their friends for some apple cider, donuts, and a corn maze is worth a shot.
Now that the weather is getting colder, hunting, Homecoming, and Halloween seasons are all sneaking up. Take advantage of these events by getting involved with your teen. There are so many simple ways to stay in touch with your kids, it isn’t always necessary to have such serious conversations. Any family outing is guaranteed some form of small talk. Don’t be overbearing but don’t be afraid to shout out an idea to them every once in awhie. A movie, dinner, spa date, etc. are ways to prove you are a cool parent but not overwhelming them with “quality time.”
