September 11 – 19, 2011
This examiner first heard of this exercise in the 2011 Chittenden County Vermont Growers Guide, a wealth of information available to the public at your local store, library, farmers market or stand.
For my first attempt, considering I belong to a Community Supported Agriculture program, frequent local farmers markets, and farm stands, I did fairly well.
Please check out the slideshow for more localvore menu suggestions.
It was much more difficult than I anticipated. Much of the products, spices, sodas, packaged goods already in my pantry were outside the 100 mile radius. Many were over the 1,000 mile radius, in California for example.
Localvore is the term for someone only consuming food and/or products grown or produced within a hundred miles of their home.
For example a hundred mile radius from Colchester would reach West Lebanon, NH to the south, Littleton, NH to the east, Tupper Lake, NY to the west and Montreal, QC, Canada to the north.
This would be my goal for the 8 days of the challenge.
I recorded everything I ate, as best I could, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snacks. Then, where it came from and if it was local, within the 100 miles radius.
I did incorporate the produce and poultry from Paul Mazza’s CSA in Colchester, and other local establishments, but some days, there was not time to cook something from scratch or I wanted a treat.
Here is an example of meals that were successful and (unsuccessful):
Hot cider – Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Waterbury,
homemade peach raspberry pie – fruit from Paul Mazza’s, Colchester, Pillsbury crust, Minneapolis, MN,
milk – Hood, Barre,
Paula Red apple – Paul Mazza’s.
Lemonade – Simply Lemonade, Apopka, FL
Ham & Cheese with apple chutney sandwich and tortilla chips – Hero’s Welcome General Store, North Hero
Macintosh apple – Hackett’s Orchard, South Hero.
Homemade macaroni and cheese – Cabot cheddar, Cabot, pasta from product from Canada,
salad – Paul Mazza’s,
corn-on-the-cob with cilantro lime butter – Paul Mazza’s,
Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar Crunch – Waterbury,
Orange JELL-O – Kraft, IL,
Lori’s Cupcakes Vanilla Angel Cupcake – Essex,
Powerade – Atlanta, GA,
Dan’s Chocolates Truffle – Burlington,
Macintosh apple – Hackett’s Orchard,
tap water with lemon,
Next time this examiner takes this challenge; I’ll be more prepared, stock the shelves and meal plan ahead of time!
