Meet local artist Efren Rebugio Jr. new on the Tampa art scene but with big plans to try and unite the artists. Efren was born in Jacksonville, Florida into a naval family that travelled around before settling here in Tampa. He attended the University of West Florida in Pensacola where he studied sports medicine because of the usual pressures of future job security. Efren then attended the Art Institute in Tampa for graphic design but left in 2010 to start his own clothing design and freelance graphic design company while also working at a T-shirt design company in the mall, never graduating from the college.
Efren has been on the Art scene for the past few years doing mostly outdoor and event showings such as Barking Hearts at The Heights, Square One Events at the Ritz in Ybor, Art on the Water at the Sail Pavilion, Art Slam in downtown Bradenton, Art after Dark at the Tampa Museum of Art, and Old Dirty Sundays every Sunday. Efren also has begun a series of drawings of bands while performing at local venues he will create 2 drawings a night one for the band and one that the band signs for part of the collection, so far he captured concerts at the Orpheum, Crow Bar, Club Fuze, and Summer Jam at New World Brewery. Recently Efren also captured the DJs on the Cowhead show where he also got some air time.
Three years Ago Efren was introduced to The Roosevelt 2.0 building and their mission; sustainable local living. He started by helping with the cleaning and refurbishing of the building as they re-vamped the building, then began lending his hand to art parties, events, and artist portfolio reviews. Then Efren partnered with Carlos Pons Paz and began running an arts program at The Roosevelt Building. Based on a time-bank or barter system artists will volunteer to either work at the building or teach art classes for a month of representation. The Goals of the Roosevelt program; a monthly rotation of artists with an opening reception for the new artists, weekly open art jams for artist on artist networking, interacting, and expansion, and I & I parties.
Efren is hoping in the near future to create his network of artists where he connect artists to other artists and help the arts community through his own work he already built a diversity of markets rock & hip hop music scenes, skaters, organic farmers, and politicos. He also has networked with a lot of artists already through the process of just doing so many different art events. Efren feels that he is here in Tampa for a reason he believes there is an art market and art society that can be built here. The big dream is to implement an art department within the government, all this while he still hones his skill, style, and creativity as an artist.
