Emma Watson creates magic, romance in new Lancome Midnight Rose commercial — A young woman loses her hat, and an enamored young man tries to return it in the new Tresor Midnight Rose commercial from Lancome. That is all well and good, but the ad would likely not be getting nearly as much attention as it is if it weren’t for the world reknowned actor who is playing the hatless woman. Oddly enough, many audiences will first see Emma Watson playing this short romantic role in a commercial before they will ever see her in a post-Potter film, though those are coming, too.
The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II actor who has played young, brainy Hermione Granger for half of her life grows up enough to bring romance to the new Lancome commercial. With her short hair slicked back, bright red lipstick, and short skirt, Emma Watson walks through darkened streets dimly lit by old-fashioned street lamps.
A young man sits in a cafe with a black hat on the table in front of him and appears to have a flashback of this same young woman wearing a black hat entering the book shop where he works. She sets the hat down in the store, asks for help in getting a book down from a high shelf (the book is titled, appropriately, Midnight Rose), then leaves without the hat.
The young man sees her later and tries to return the hat. He chases her as far as a boat that just then sets out on the water. Just when he thinks she is gone, he discovers that she is really standing right behind him.
Lancome proves it is no fool of a company when it comes to making the most of its association with new spokesperson, Emma Watson. Before the release of the commercial, the company released a “making-of” preview video that showed images from the ad taken by Mario Testino (who also shot Emma Watson’s cover and photos for Vogue magazine as well as the official engagement photos of Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge).
Ms. Watson makes a few comments about the perfume and the ad in the preview:
“The fragrance is very sweet and warm and playful,” says Ms. Watson in the preview. “There’s something magic about midnight and the concept of a flower that blooms at this time.”
She said she was excited to work with Mr. Testino again because “he is someone that I trust implicitly.” She liked the story they put together for the commercial because of the role that fate can play in life. “Life is magical,” she said and hoped that they conveyed that in the ad.
One could argue that Emma Watson knows a little bit about magic.
Though currently, it is the Lancome ad that is getting attention, Emma Watson has also completed work on two films post-Potter that will be released over the next several months — My Week With Marilyn opens on November 4, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower opens in 2012.
