RIP Monster Massive, seems fitting for Halloween. I’m thinking of making a headstone that reads “RIP Monster Massive” and putting in my front lawn as part of my Halloween decorations.
I first got news of Escape from Wonderland, Insomniac’s brand new Halloween event, at Electric Daisy Carnival back in June, and I thought exactly what everyone else thought…Uh oh, there goes Monster Massive…
My assumption was that, over time, Escape from Wonderland would devour Monster Massive and become the premiere Halloween party not only in Southern California but in the US. But, never did I think the destruction would happen before the events even began.
Over the last few months I looked at the competition, and even almost wrote an article about Monster Massive VS Escape from Wonderland. I figured both events would do well and Monster would succeed considering it’s been the Halloween event for so long, and it was hosting Armin Van Buuren’s only Armin Only show in the US. Go Ventures would do well…Right?
Then came the full Escape from Wonderland lineup. I have to admit, it’s a pretty good lineup, covering multiple genres, new artists, and of course major headliners; Afrojack, Markus Schulz, Subfocus, Bobina, AN21, Umek and many many others, way too many to list. Monster Massive was slowly slipping through the cracks. But, Monster came back with the announcement of Moby, Erick Morillo, Nero, Zeds Dead, Kraddy, The Gas Lamp Killers and Junior Sanchez. (This is the part where I would add “plus many others,” but there are no others…that was the full lineup)
But we still had a competition at this point; it came down to a few simple choices.
- Go Ventures VS Insomniac
- Oak Canyon Park VS National Orange Show
- Armin Only + a few other artists VS many artists of different calibers covering multiple genres.
I began to weight out my options; the first and the most important matter to me was Go Ventures VS Insomniac. The clear winner is Insomniac; the answer to that question will always be Insomniac. Why? They throw better events, they have superior organization and attention to detail, and they bring it every time! On the other hand, Go Ventures is notorious for poor organization, long lines, lame lineups and just an overall bad vibe at their events. But, they get a big attendance based on default; their 2 main events are on huge party nights, Halloween and New Years Eve. So the clear cut winner: Insomniac
Next issue is Oak Canyon Park VS the National Orange show (NOS). The answer is simple again, NOS. It’s my personal favorite venue and that’s all I have to say on that matter. I’m not even going to consider that Go Ventures never even had Oak Canyon Park secured. Winner: NOS
Now comes the music, this is an important one. Although trance is currently in a slump right now, Armin Van Buuren is still the biggest DJ in the world. And anyone that was at Together As One 2009, when Armin brought his Armin Only show to the Los Angeles Sports Arena, knows that that was an incredible, magical night, and still to this day I get chills thinking about it. I would love to relive that night, and go see Armin Only at Monster Massive. However, I know I’d just be chasing the dragon. Armin Only’s magic at TAO 09 was due to many factors, trance was at a high, it was the tours last show, it was New Years, we had just elected a new President and people were feeling hopeful, and it was inside the Los Angeles Sports Arena, in that big, long, dark building, fully packed in with lights, lasers, speakers and everything you would expect an Armin Only show to bring. This wouldn’t be the case at Oak Canyon Park. And let’s face it, the rest of the Monster lineup is meh.
Meanwhile, Escape’s lineup has one incredible artist after the next, the music winner is obvious: Escape
As, more news began to pour in about Escape, like their 2 haunted houses that will be at the event, and theatrics with scary creatures throughout the grounds, I kind of began to dislike Monster even more. How had Go Ventures produced Monster Massive for 14 years and never even thought to add in any theatrics or a haunted house? It’s a pretty obvious idea. The answer: They never cared to. Go Ventures had no competition so why bother throwing a good event? Do the basic minimum, charge the maximum amount of money for tickets and profit profit profit.
Speaking of profit, the ticket prices for Monster were outrageous. We are in a recession Go Ventures and your events are not worth $80. Get a grip.
So here we are today, Monster Massive has been canceled. And, although, I had no interest in attending Monster, I didn’t want it to be canceled. This is not a good thing for Southern California’s EDM scene, it’s always nice to have options. Two huge events, and all these artists here on one night, it’s what makes Southern California the premiere place for EDM in this country. And Monster Massive has been around for 14 years, that’s not easy feat. But, I feel there is no one to blame but Go Ventures, over the years I saw them throw mediocre event after mediocre event, and their bad karma finally caught up.
I guess there are only 2 questions left to ask at this point.
What costume are you wearing to Escape from Wonderland?
And what happens to Together As One, the event which united Insomniac and Go Ventures?
