A great way to travel through Europe is by joining a tour group. A local alternative to the big chain tours and regional tours when you arrive in Europe is European Experiences.
European Experiences is a locally owned tour company that specializes in slow tours of Europe. The concept is that instead of changing hotels every day or two and seeing most of the landscape through a bus window, they set up a base for about a week which allows traveler to not only see, but experience the local landscape and culture of the location.
They travel in small groups of about 10-12 people and stay in small villages in guesthouses, with a local host.
The owners Kathy and Charley Wood are “passionate European travelers” who personally lead their expeditions throughout various parts of Europe. Charley is semi-retired and has a local part-time home renovation business and Kathy is on the faculty of the business school at the University of Tennessee.
The company currently has five options for potential travelers to choose from:
The Luberon Experience: Travelers stay in the village of Bonnieux, this serves as the base while they experience the best of Provence (a mountainous region of south eastern France on the Mediterranean Sea adjacent to Italy).
TRIPS OFFERED ANNUALLY IN MAY/JUNE AND SEPTEMBER
The Chianti Experience: Travelers stay in the famous wine region of Chianti in the heart of Tuscany where they will experience great shopping, great wine, and some of Italy’s finest cooking.
TRIPS WILL BE OFFERED IN 2011, 2012, AND 2014
The Cotswolds Experience: Travelers will stay in the well-preserved village of Chipping Campden to experience some of the best of England’s countryside. Historic castles, traditional pubs, gardens, and more await.
NEXT TRIPS WILL BE OFFERED IN 2013
The Salzkammergut Experience: Travelers will journey to a magnificent region of mountains and lakes in the Austrian Alps. The journey includes scenic walking tours through the mountains, a visit to Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, and much more.
NEXT TRIP WILL BE IN JULY 2012.
The Bavarian Experience: Travelers stay in the village of Garmisch, located at the foot of the tallest mountain in Germany. Fairytale castles, mountain trips and beer are just some of the experiences available to travelers on this tour.
NO TRIP CURRENTLY SCHEDULED BUT TAKING REQUESTS FROM INTERESTED TRAVELERS.
This type of travel isn’t for everyone. Many people want to have the hustle and bustle of seeing as much as they can in 7-10 days, staying in hotels or hostels in the major city centers, and traveling in large groups, getting to know people on their tour. But for a nice alternative, with a more relaxed environment, that allows you to not only see, but experience the culture and people of the areas offered as tours to travelers then European Experiences may be an option worth taking a look at!
