A former DeKalb County officer on Monday confessed to raping two teens and giving one of them marijuana.
In June, a grand jury returned a 15-count indictment against Mr. Quevius Orion Thornton, 29, charging him with having sex with two 15-year-old girls, DeKalb District Attorney Mr. Robert James said.
“Quevius Thornton exploited his position and preyed upon two innocent victims in 2010,” Mr. James said. “His actions were simply inexcusable and deplorable.
“Thornton violated his oath as an officer and betrayed the trust of members of his community. My prayers go out to the victim and their families. I hope today’s sentence will be a step towards bringing some closure and resolve.”
Judge Cynthia Becker sentenced Mr. Thornton to 25 years in prison, Mr. James said. He is expected to serve 15 years as well as register as a sex offender upon release.
Initially, Mr. Thornton pleaded not guilty to the charges, but on Monday he recanted, the district attorney’s spokesman Mr. Eric Burton said.
DeKalb County officers charged Mr. Thornton with child molestation and statutory rape for one of the girls, Mr. Burton said.
For the second girl, he was charged with multiple counts of child molestation and statutory rape as well as four counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, simple battery and possession of marijuana, Mr. Burton said.
Mr. Thornton was a friend of the victims’ families, Mr. Burton said.
He raped both girls between October and January.
The second girl was assaulted at various locations including in the back seat of Mr. Thornton’s car in the parking lots of elementary schools and at Mr. Thornton’s Ward Lake Trail home.
“He lured her from one location to another for indecent purposes, which in this case was sexual encounters,” Mr. James said.
The indictment alleged that Mr. Thornton had sex with the girl in the back seat of his car in the parking lot of Dunaire Elementary School on S. Indian Creek Drive, and Panola Way Elementary School.
On Oct. 25, Mr. Thornton also took the girl to Shoal Creek Park on Glenwood Road and engaged in intercourse and oral sex, prosecutors said.
Mr. Thornton also slapped the teen and gave her marijuana, Mr. James said.
Mr. Thornton, an officer for three and a half years, was arrested in January, Mr. James said. Mr. Thornton, who was placed on administrative leave, then resigned from the department.
