In speaking with Entertainment Weekly on Sept. 13, Sylvester Stallone talked about the ever-increasing cast signed on to appear in “The Expendables 2.” More of your favorite action stars from the 1980s will appear, including Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
And casting may not be finished yet, as Stallone mentioned both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as possibilities.
Van Damme had declined to participate in the first film, a send-up and homage to 1980s action films that helped make him a Hollywood name.
The original “The Expendables” starred Stallone, who also directed and produced the movie, and included among others Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke.

The 2010 movie went on to make $275 million in the worldwide box office, making it successful enough to justify a sequel.
This time, Van Damme’s on board to get physical with Stallone.
“We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one,” Stallone told Entertainment Weekly.
Stallone also confirmed what was reported earlier in this column, that Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back in the sequel. And as expected, they will take on more substantial roles than the cameos they had in the “The Expendables.”
And the casting for the film may not yet be finished. When talking about Norris coming on board the film, Stallone also mentioned Cage, Michael Biehn and Michael Pare. His interest in working with such a wide list of action stars is both personal and professional, acknowledging the movie kick-started some careers.
“We’ve got Chuck Norris and I think Nic Cage,” said Stallone. “We’re trying to work out different scenarios. I like using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot. So we’re always looking for actors like Michael Biehn and Michael Pare. I like those kinds of guys. Someone did it for me and I like to see if I can do it for them.
Making light of the stars’ ages, which plays a significant role in the “The Expendable” films, roles and marketing, Stallone joked:
“We also need some new blood in there, a Navy Seal-type, because with the Expendables none of them have 20-20 vision anymore. They need some help, man.”
And although he didn’t confirm the rumor that John Travolta will appear in “The Expendables 2,” Stallone didn’t dismiss the notion entirely.
“It’s possible. The one thing I’ve learned is what is a fact on Monday is a complete fallacy on Tuesday. A lot of it is scheduling. It’s not financial. It’s just that Bulgaria is definitely a jaunt. It’s a commitment, you know what I mean? Especially in the dead of winter.”
“The Expendables 2” starts filming in Bulgaria at the end of this month, with Simon Cox directing.
The movie is tentatively scheduled for release Aug. 17, 2012.
When “The Expendables 2” is released, Pittsburgh movie-goers will be able to catch it at the AMC Loews Waterfront 22, with tickets available for online purchase at Fandango, as well as at SouthSide Works Cinema and Waterworks Cinema 10.
