Fall is apple season in Oak Glen, California which starts after Labor Day, every year and runs until Thanksgiving. Located only 90 minutes from Los Angeles, in the San Bernardino mountains, where it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in the cities nearer the ocean and ithe desert communities around Palm Springs. This also makes the fall colors more vibrant, on a landscape than is more like New England, than southern California.
With the coming of Fall, the blossoms that once covered the apple trees, have produced apples, and the many orchards, farms and ranches in the Oak Glen area, are now open for visitors to ‘come and pick-ur-own”, then pay as you leave.
There is 50 varieties of apples, different types from different orchards, with the first pickings of the season “Spartan apples” – crunchy, juicy, and full of flavor – but there are other varieties as well to choose from, among them – macintosh, gala, stayman winesap, braeburn, and gold delicious – as well as berries and pumpkins, to round out the produce available.
One of the fun things to do is “press your own cider”, and at Willowbrook Apple Farm, a small family owned farm, visitors can do just that on the old fashioned cider press, 20 lbs of apples will make one gallon of cider. Here also the Willowbrook Honey Bees have been busy gathering nectar in preparation for the “Honey Harvest” held each Fall.
Oak Glen is a “hands-on family getaway, where, there are many more activities, than picking fruit. The different farms and orchards offer – petting and feeding areas where kids can inter-act with the young farm critters, go on hayrides, pony rides and train rides; browse thru the antique shops, purchase unique gifts in the country shops, which during apple season, sells all things apple – apple butter, apple donuts, and apple pies.
