West Michigan supermarket chain Family Fare will launch its new ‘yes Rewards’ card on September 18, 2011. The card will allow customers to rack up points on purchases that can later be redeemed for dollars off a future purchase. The loyalty program will also include fuel rewards, register rewards and pharmacy rewards.
First West Michigan loyalty card
Family Fare, owned by Grand Rapids-based Spartan Foods, will be the first in West Michigan to offer its shoppers a loyalty card. Although new to the area, yes Rewards aren’t a new concept. Spartan Stores first rolled out the program in 2009 to its Northern Michigan Glen’s Market locations. Last year, it was brought to VG’s, and now it is coming to Family Fare and D&W Fresh Markets.
The yes Rewards program is similar to loyalty cards offered by other regional and national chains such as Kroger. Shoppers will need to swipe the card to have access to sale prices and accumulate points. The card will also offer other perks and benefits based upon shopping habits.
Prior to the launch of the yes Card, the closest thing West Michigan shoppers had to a loyalty card was Meijer Rewards. This program allows customers to earn cash rebates on behalf of participating non-profits. Under Meijer Rewards, shoppers could earn their group a 1 percent rebate when using a Meijer credit card and a 0.5 percent rebate when paying with cash or a debit card PIN transaction. There is no reward for paying with a check or swiping and signing for a debit card payment.
What can you earn with a yes Card?
Rewards earned from a yes Card can be broken down into three categories:
Grocery rewards: Shoppers will earn points based upon how much they spend. The points accumulate every week, and you must spend at least $50 to earn points for the week. According to the Spartan Stores website, your weekly purchases can earn you the following points:
- Spend at least $50 – Earn 50 points
- Spend at least $100 – Earn 100 points
- Spend more than $150 – Earn 150 points
Then, points can be redeemed for money off a future purchase:
- 1,000 yes points = $5 off your order
- 1,900 yes points = $10 off your order
- 4,700 yes points = $25 off your order
- 9,000 yes points = $50 off your order
Spartan Stores also indicates shoppers may be able to redeem points for free items at point values below 1,000. In addition, register rewards will offer discounts on items based upon shopping habits. The register rewards will be automatically loaded on the yes Card.
Fuel rewards: Discounts for gasoline will be available to shoppers spending at least $50 or more with their yes Card. However, the Spartan Stores website does not provide any details on the amount of the discount.
Pharmacy rewards: Finally, shoppers can earn bonus 25 points every time they refill a prescription, and $4 and $10 prescription deals will be available. Spartan Stores also appears to be taking a cue from Meijer which began offering free antibiotics, prenatal vitamins and diabetes medication a few years back. With the introduction of the yes Card, these prescriptions will be free at Spartan Stores as well.
West Michigan shoppers who want to be a part of the yes Rewards program can sign up at any Family Fare or D&W Fresh Market location or visit the Spartan Stores website to register online.
