It’s always a great time of year to become more active, and cooler fall temperatures are especially tempting. Take advantage of the great weather and increase your family fitness level with these tips and upcoming local events fit for the entire family.
When exercising with children, the key ingredient is fun. After all, to instill a permanent love for a healthy lifestyle, turning exercise into a chore is a surefire path to couch potato status. In fact, the best kind of exercise for kids may well be the kind they don’t even know they are doing: running around the playground to see how fast they can go, riding their bike with a parent to a nearby park or store, or helping in the yard by raking leaves. Here are some other ideas for making family fitness work for you:
Turn on the TV. If you have a Wii or a Kinect, skip past the sedentary games and go for the track and field setting, or volleyball, or skiiing, which will have you up, moving, and having fun.Choose a cause. There are charity walks, races, and more every weekend, all raising money to make your community stronger and healthier. Choose one that pulls at your heart strings, and then get your heart pumping for the cause!
Take it outside. Finding a sliver of time for a walk in the rush-around evenings of the typical American family can seem like a mental workout of its down, and sometimes just feel impossible. But, carving out time for a family walk or even a”sports night” when you all go to the ball field or for a bike ride on a trail before you get home can be therapeutic, fun, and do a lot for your family’s physical and emotional health.
Get silly! Who says you have to play by the rules? Set up a crazy obstacle course in your backyard and time each other to see who can finish it the fastest. Or, assign your own silly names to tried-and-true exercises to turn push-ups into pirate’s planks or jumping jacks into princess shimmies. Your kids will get a kick out of seeing you break out of the grown-up mold, and you’ll all burn extra calories laughing.
Family fitness is more than fun, it’s essential. Whatever your reason or cause, seek fitness opportunites for your family this weekend!
