Besides offering numerous dining options that are best suited for adults, Santana Row in San Jose, California also has a number of restaurants that are good for families with children. When it comes to dining with children, it is helpful if the restaurant has a casual atmosphere, a medium noise level so that every laugh (or cry) does not stand out so much, as well as something to do for children. Here are three family-friendly restaurants in Santana Row:
The Yard House
The Yard House is great for family outings and offers an extensive menu with something for everyone. The food menu options range from burgers to ahi crunchy salad to orange peel chicken. Plus, the beer selection is truly amazing and offers two sampler options.
The sports fan(s) in the family can catch up on their favorite games on big screen T.V.’s, and because the overall noise level is a bit higher, kids can be a bit noisy without causing a disturbance.
Upon being seated, children are given a great activities book that also includes the kids’ menu. There are many pages to color and do activities such as tic-tac-toe, mazes, connect the dots and more. It keeps kids much better entertained than the two page coloring sheet that is provided at many places. The kids’ menu offers a good selection, and kids’ meals come with a delicious frozen strawberry bar with big pieces of real fruit for dessert.
When the Yard House first opened, there were long lines throughout the day. While the restaurant is still very busy, it is now possible to get a table without a wait, for example during lunch on the weekends.
The Counter has a casual atmosphere and offers a wide selection of burgers. Diners can order a burger off the menu or custom-build their own, which is a lot of fun. Pattie choices are beef, chicken, turkey, or veggie, in three different sizes on a selection of buns or in a bowl. There is an impressive list of burger toppings, cheese, and sauces to choose from.
The Counter is famous for its sweet potato fries. There are also regular fries and onion strings, and the 50/50 (a combination of two of the three previous items) is a popular choice and is plenty to share between two to four people.
Kids are given a coloring sheet, crayons, and often bendable Wikki stix, which provide lots of entertainment. The kids’ menu includes mini burgers, grilled cheese, ham & cheese, and PB & J, and is served with fries or applesauce.
The Counter is also a good spot to watch sporting events. The bar offers four beers on tap, wine, and cocktails. The milkshakes are also very popular, and there is always a seasonal milkshake flavor available. There is outdoor seating available.
Wahoo’s Fish Tacos
Wahoo’s Fish Tacos features a funky surfer décor and a casual atmosphere. As the name implies, the menu features plenty of tacos with a variety of fillings, ranging from fish to carne asada to mushrooms to tofu. Wahoo’s also offers very popular bowls which are served over rice and beans. In addition, the menu includes salads, sandwiches, enchiladas, and burritos. The options on the kids’ menu are a kid’s bowl, a kid’s plate (with a taco, an enchilada, or rice and beans), a mini quesadilla, kid’s nachos, and a black bean and cheese burrito.
Diners order at the counter and seat themselves. The wait is shorter than in restaurants with servers, which is helpful with little ones who can’t sit for too long.
The restaurant is quite large and when it is not too crowded children can often roam around a bit. There aren’t any coloring sheets provided, so it is helpful to bring something to keep little ones entertained. Besides inside seating, there is also outdoor seating.
