Known as the city that never sleeps, now New York City really has it all. The first NYC “racino” opens today at Aqueduct Raceway. With glitzy “Sex and the City” machines honoring the essence of life in the Big Apple, men and women are sure to flock to this local gambling mecca. Closer than Atlantic City, now NYC dwellers can get their game on right in Queens.
On Friday, the doors open to the Aqueduct racino. A ribbon will be cut after the first phase of the race track gaming venue at 11 AM with the facility opening to the public at 1 PM. Gamers have access to 2,300 video slot machines. There are also 2,000 electronic game tables including roulette and baccarat.
According to the New York Daily News, Resorts World New York spokesperson Stefan Friedman said, “There’s an old tradition that folks who game their their odds are better on opening day. So I think you’ll see a big crowd.” The facility also hosts several restaurants and a bar with what Friedman claims is the “largest television in Queens.”
The racino expects people from NYC, Queens and all over the city as well as seasoned gamblers from Atlantic City looking for a change of pace. There is room at the racino for 5,000 players. The residents of South Ozone Park are hoping the racino gives their neighborhood an economic boost.
Real estate broker Rolando Gil is hopeful the racino will bring attention to the community, stating, “Nobody really comes here at all. This casino will do for us what the other casino did for Yonkers. People know where Yonkers is now.”
In mid-December the racino will open a second phase with two more dining venues, a skybridge connected to the subway, an event space and an additional 2,515 games. The current facility will be open daily from 8 AM to 4 AM.
According to the New York Post, the racino currently has six “Sex and the City” slot machines. Slot machines based on the popular television show depicting four New York City women are sure to attract plenty of attention. The gaming officials predict it will be one of the most popular games at the racino.
Playing the “Sex” games costs anywhere from $.50 to $6. Gamers can play up to four games at the same time. The top payout is $20,000, which is sure to make the games even more alluring. The button spins a slot machine reel with images of “Sex and the City” ladies and other visuals from the show. Carrie’s man, Mr. Big, is represented by a suitcase.
Other games at the new racino include Keno, Cash Spin and Wheel of Fortune. The biggest difference between the NYC racino and the casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas are the lack of live tables. In New York, live tables are prohibited so a mechanical device rolls the dice. Either way, the racino is sure to bring plenty of business to the South Ozone Park area.
