There are a smattering of jobs that one can conduct in-home, architect, writer, accountant, housekeeper, estate planner, tutor, and photographer. The before mentioned jobs are largely held by women who are mastering the art of managing their work and families. One could say these women are designing their destinies by starting an in-home business.
In a series of articles we look at women working from home and uncover some of the more unusual jobs that sustain their world. Some jobs like writer sound pretty run of the mill, but then comes along the more intriguing teacher of the Feldenkrais® Method. Did you mean Feldenkrais®? What is that? Her own destiny designer, Carolyn Fleg a Guild Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner explains,
“Feldenkrais is a system of movement that fosters awareness of our patterns. Feldenkrais is more about attention than doing, more about quality than quantity, more about taking care than about ambition. In movement lessons (Awareness Through Movement or ATMs) we discover our habits and how to use them, or not, to move more efficiently and pleasurably.”
Alternatively, simply put – Happy Hips and feeling a bit like a Picasso painting.
Flegs classes come with unusual titles like Happy Hips or the Dead Bird. Fleg poses these questions to students in the Happy Hips Class, “How do we use the hips? The hip joints? Where are the hip joints? How do the hips move safely and easily and work with the feet, the legs, the torso, the shoulders, the spine and head?”
Well, what about the eyes? In a recent class, Fleg was able to get her students to feel like a Picasso painting, “One eye will feel and look bigger when we are finished”, she said as students were coached into separating the eye from the hand. She informed them that most people are asymmetrical, but look to correct how they sit or stand unconsciously.Like Picasso, the Dead Bird class allows one to be ok with not being symmetrical and rather gracefully encourages to be ok with being a little off center.
After attending Awareness and Movement® classes, Carolyn Fleg wanted to continue expanding on what she had learned so trained to become a Feldenkrais® Practitioner. While mostly working at her home studio, she has been a guest teacher at MoBu Dance, and is currently working with elementary school children in the classroom, sharing with them ideas about moving, thinking, feeling, and sensing.
“It is so good for their brains”, says Fleg. “It will help increase their learning and sense of self.”
Fleg has the Bird-in-Hand as a Practitioner of the Feldenkrais® Method. A ballet dancer, writer, practitioner and more, She lives and works with her family in San Francisco where Functional Integration® (FI) lessons and Awreness Through Movement® (ATM) classes are offered in her studio.
