Fall is upon us, which means it’s time to trade the crisp, refreshing wines of summer for something richer and more intense to warm your core. Flights WineCafe is just the place to sit by the fire and savor a dense red wine or port while you visit with friends or sink into a book.
Wine has been a lifelong passion for Marcia and Donn Bruns, proprietors of Flights WineCafe in Morrison, Colorado. This cozy wine bar has a patio that feels like a genuine escape. The WineCafe is nestled at the base of the foothills in a cottage built in 1870 that was once a boarding house, part of a tent city for miners and railroad workers. Today it is a delightful retreat from the bustle of the city, or of traffic passing through Morrison for mountain recreation or concerts at Red Rocks. No matter how congested Bear Creek Avenue may be, enjoying a glass of wine on the patio at Flights remains a relaxing event.
Marcia and Donn’s careers as artists – Marcia as an interior designer and Donn a corporate portrait photographer – led them to the creative pursuit of opening a wine bar. Marcia describes their philosophy of wine as “relax and enjoy.” She invites people to come and sit on the patio to see firsthand how to incorporate this philosophy into daily life. While patio weather is largely behind us, the WineCafe’s patio remains a great place to bask in the autumn sun.
Marcia said Flights WineCafe is a “small venue with lots of character…the owners want you to indulge yourself and learn about wine by coming to our wine bar.” She describes the WineCafe’s ambiance as setting it apart from other wine bars. The interior of the cottage feels like a living room. The comfortable environment has become a meeting place for several book clubs. Flights is popular for date nights, business colleagues grabbing a glass of wine after work, and young people with an interest in wine. Wedding showers and rehearsal dinners are among their private events. In the fall and winter months Flights hosts wine dinners that sell out quickly.
The name is drawn from the term – flights – given to samples of wine used for comparison. Marcia hopes that is what people will do when they come to Flights WineCafe. A wine flight is a collection of smaller pours that together equal approximately one full glass of wine. Flights invites patrons to make their own flights using any of the wines on the list in the First Class Flight. Ordering flights of wine is a great way to sip and sample different wines. If a couple orders flights of wine, that gives them six different wines to taste and compare. For the less adventurous, Flights offers four standard flights that have the staff select your wines: the White Flight, Red Flight, White-Blush-Red Flight, and Fruit-Forward Flight.
The change of season means the menu will change as well. Soups will replace salads, and additional red wines will be added to the list. Flights serves six seasonal beers and offers a gluten-free menu including pizza and bread. Their Wine Down Weekend specials include select wines priced at $5.00/glass, reserve wines at $10.00/glass, and three quiche bites for $5.00. Their Colorado offerings include exclusively Two Rivers Winery Riesling and Syrah, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon joining the wine list for the winter.
Flights WineCafe is family-owned and operated. Marcia and Donn’s son, Alex, is the chef. Their youngest son works as a dishwasher. Flights is located at 116 Stone Street in Morrison, Colorado. Take a right at the fork on Mt. Vernon Avenue when pulling into town and Flights will be on your left.
Flights WineCafe is open Tuesday-Thursday from 3pm-9pm or later, and Friday-Sunday from 11am-11pm.
