Mr. Robert Platshorn, or as he is known in the medical marijuana community, “Bobby Tuna”, has taken his efforts to legalize medical marijuana to those voters who state and federal legislators count on the most to be elected; seniors. Mr. Platshorn spent nearly twenty-nine years in federal prison for smuggling marijuana into southern Florida during the 1970’s. Since his release from prison a couple of years ago, he has vowed to dedicate the rest of his life to the legalization cause and what better way to accomplish that goal than by educating seniors regarding the benefits of legalization.
Approximately fifty to sixty senior citizens attended a “Silver Tour” event at the Golden Lakes retirement community in West Palm Beach on Sunday. They were presented with a short introduction by Mr. Platshorn followed by a few personal stories by members of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) regarding how medical cannabis has personally affected their lives or the lives of somebody close to them. A medical doctor then educated the crowd by explaining in detail the numerous benefits of medical pot. Mr. Irvin Rosenfeld, one of only four remaining federal medical marijuana patients then told the guests how he still receives a cannister of three hundred marijuana cigarettes monthly from the federal government for his bone disorder under a program that was terminated by the federal government in the early 1980’s. Lastly, an attorney spoke about how seniors can become more involved in the legalization issue by calling and writing their legislators and urging them to support their cause.
“The Silver Tour is a way to let the seniors of Florida know that there is a group of people who are concerned about them and are attempting to show them that they can have a major impact upon medical marijuana legislation.” Mr. Platshorn goes on to say, “I don’t know if there is any other medium that is communicating these most important issues to the group of people who can really benefit the most from the legalization of medical cannabis.”
Mr. Platshorn is on the Board of Directors of NORML of Florida and has created the Silver Tour where he intends to hold events across the state of Florida at retirement communities, senior centers, assisted living facilities etc.. to give seniors an opportunity to listen to his personal story as well as acquire information and literature relating to the effort to provide safe access to those individuals who are seeking alternative medicine for a number of diseases and ailments.
