Foster Parents; “back to the basics,”
documentation. Part 7 of 9.
We are talking about the how to of documentation; Let us continue now. What was that you didn’t start with number one? Start here; part 1 / part 2 / part 3 / part 4 / part 5 / part 6 / part 7. You missed a lot, including an eye opening scenario, fun but effective. Now let us continue.
- Make an entry in each child’s journal each day, even if nothing out of the ordinary took place. Date it, with the time of day. Do not allow yourself the luxury of thinking “Oh I’ll catch up on my journals tomorrow, I’m tired tonight. You wont’ do it, or you’ll forget pertinent details.
Pay close attention to the following story; We have a pending case right now where the foster parents innocently turned over their journals to their agency. The agency had informed these foster parents that the journals they kept on the foster children within their foster care home belonged to the agency. The agency is now using these journals to pursue allegations on these foster parents.
Let me clarify this; The charges had been found unsubstantiated prior to these foster parents unknowingly turning these journals over to their agency. Now the allegations have been reopened, and they are being charged with other allegations. The agency is using their own words to persecute/prosecute these foster parents.
Examples (real charges)
1. They placed the children in time out…..too long according to the agency worker.
2. They took the children to Church….a violation according to the agency social worker.
You see you must understand these journals belong to you, not the agency. You have written in them, you have kept track of the child’s life incidents while placed in your home. They do not belong to the agency but to you. They may try to get their hands on them, but if they do obtain a court order the statement within them, technically speaking, will protect you from the agency using the wording contained within them from being used against you in a court of law. This is why it is imperative that you mark each and every composition book with the statement we have given you.
Education here again education is your best defense, not only for yourself but for these other foster parents who have not heard about the assistance that you have found. They just don’t know how to protect themselves against this enemy. If you have computer skills, you can be of assistance to others that may not know anything about computers.
- If you missed it, we made an important annoucement in the last paragraph of part 6, if you missed it you need to go back and find out what our annoucement was about. A comprehensive manual, a guide to Pro Se?
Two more parts to go. Watch for our next series called “Ethics”?
