Located just southeast of downtown Indianapolis, is one of the city’s six cultural districts known as Fountain Square. Home to several restaurants, retail stores, and nightlife entertainment, Fountain Square has been able to maintain its independent identity over the past century. With so many heritages in the area, it became time to examine what Fountain Square has to offer.
The experience started with a “Passport”, that was provided by the wonderful team at Yelp. On this particular night, Yelp joined forces with Upland Brewing Company, Zodiac Vodka, and Indy Swank to provide a fun atmosphere in the area. While visiting the Yelp team at Indy Swank, which is a vintage clothing store, located at 1043 Virginia Avenue, it became obvious that this is one of Indianapolis’ treasures. The store is inviting and the clothing, accessories, and even some fun additions for any home, seemed to be must haves. Store hours are from 11am until 7pm, during the week, and if that wasn’t enough, they’re opened on Saturday until 7pm and Sunday until 5pm. With hours like this, it’s hard not to find time to check out some fun clothing. After exiting the store, sporting a vintage 1970’s jacket, it was time to check out a few more spots.
Located just a couple of doors down, within the same building, is the Red Lion Grog House. As mentioned in a previous article, Red Lion Grog House, not only serves great local beverages, but makes a Meat Loaf that’s just simply delicious. The atmosphere at this restaurant is romantic and is perfect for enjoying drinks after work or enjoying dinner with the entire family.
Not everyone who comes to Fountain Square is looking for clothing or food. Sometimes, art is on the mind and Fountain Square has avenues to serve that need. The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, is located in the same building as well, and is well known for showcasing some exciting galleries. Opened Thursdays through Saturday from 11am until 6pm, this is a destination that has to be visited while spending time in the Fountain Square neighborhood.
Summer is finally over and the 6pm closing time at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, almost aligns itself with the setting of the sun. That is a perfect indication for transitioning into the evening festivities. Fountain Square has created an environment in which driving to different venues isn’t necessary. Since so many establishments can be visited on foot, let’s check out two more.
If sports are on the mind, Action & Atomic Duckpin Bowling should be placed on the agenda. Located at 1105 Prospect Street, this is a blast. Small pins, great beverages, and even catered food if you choose, it’s hard to go wrong here. Opened Monday through Saturday at 11am, this is an experience that can occur during the daylight hours as well as night fall. Reservations are strongly encouraged to ensure each party is accommodated fully.
Perhaps Bingo is your thing, but traditional Bingo just isn’t exciting enough. Not to worry, Fountain Square has that base covered too. Everyone month, typically on Wednesdays, the White Rabbit Cabaret, located at 1116 Prospect Street, hosts the Burlesque Bingo Bango Show. This is not your average Burlesque show, or Bingo game. It’s highly comedic and the audience becomes part of the entertainment. Shows start at 9pm, and are hosted by the Muncie Brothers and Alabaster Betty. This is great entertainment for customers who are 21 years of age or older, are not offended by language not found on traditional television or cable programs, and understand the concept of a burlesque type of performance. The prizes are fun and the prices are affordable. Entry fees are generally $10.00, and their next show is tomorrow evening, which has a Halloween theme to it. If you attend tomorrow’s show in costume, the entry fee is reduced to just $5.00.
Fountain Square is here to stay. Fun and exciting clothing provided by companies like Indy Swank make this is a fashion area. Great food from locations like the Red Lion Grog House makes this a great eatery district. Events and venues like Action & Atomic Duckpin Bowling and the Burlesque Bingo Bango show, creates an entertaining environment. All in all, Fountain Square has a little bit of something that caters to nearly everyone.
