As a previous restaurant owner and manager, one of the most annoying tasks had to be the scheduling of staff. Without fail, as soon as the schedule would go up, there would be immediate changes. I even considered myself quite good at scheduling and even for me, it was an impossible task to get things correct and updated.
It seemed in the foodservice industry that technology based companies often overlooked our industry for trying out new ideas to make our daily operations easier or more productive. Check-A-Schedule is a free online employee scheduling application. It is easy to create and keep track of your employees’ schedules all in one place. I spoke with Greg MalockofL.C. Enterprises, the parent company of Check-A-Schedule and asked him what was the inspiration was to develop this app.
Actually, I was sitting at P.F. Changs during lunch and thinking about how the scheduling is really flexible at a restaurant,” said Greg Malock. “Four hours here, four hours there, scheduling can be difficult and we wanted to make the Check-A-Schedule tool free and give value to those that use it. Our goal is to get people to the site.”
There is currently one model available but other features will emerge as the company receives feedback from the users. “We want the industry to tell us what they want,” said Malock. “The other features will come about from feedback of the users, which in the first month totaled 138 users and being used in 41 restaurants. There are lots of benefits to using the program, for example you can just notify a few or notify all of the staff. You can also send a comment to individuals or groups. The ease of use is far superior to those that are out there. Most programs are a weeklong training program to use the software, with Check-A-Schedule you can be up and running in 15 minutes after imputing the employee data.”
Not just for Restaurants
Although Check-A-Schedule is the first app designed from the company with the foodservice industry in mind, the app is easily adaptable to other areas of scheduling. It is good for any form of scheduling, from meetings to soccer teams, church organizations to large numbers of staff.
