Salt Lake City, Ut. – Steve Powell, who’s been charged with voyeurism and possession of child porn, was obsessed with his daughter-in-law Susan Powell, according to friends of the missing woman and her family.
Sandy Crain Anderson said Steve became sexually obsessed with Susan shortly after she and his son, Josh Powell, were married in 2001, People.com reports.
He would talk “about how great she was, how beautiful she was,” Anderson told the Salt Lake Tribune.
“He was hung up on her sexually, it seemed… He’d talk about trying to see under her clothing, see her breasts. Even back then, he had this idea she was flirting with him,” she said.
Steve allegedly told Anderson after Susan vanished that he thought she ran off with another man, but continued to express his attraction for her. He was also obsessed with pornography, according to Anderson.
JoVonna Owings – one of Susan’s closets friends – told ABC 4 that Steve tried to pursue his daughter-in-law romantically.
“He had come to her one time and told her he had feelings for her and he asked her what they should tell her husband,” Owings said.
According to Owings, Susan was going to give Steve professionally shot family photos for Christmas, but when Owings viewed them, she noticed Susan was absent from the images.
She had questions about the photos and Susan explained to her that Steve already had “enough pictures of me. I’m not going to give him any more.”

Josh, currently the only named person of interest in his wife’s disappearance, alleges that the December 2009 night his wife vanished he and his two young sons—ages 2 and 4—were on a camping trip in freezing cold temperatures in the remote Tooele County, Ut. desert area at around midnight. He claims they slept in a minivan and that when they returned home the next day, Susan, 28, was gone.
