Publishing this article after the 30 Days of Mourning observed by the members of New Destiny Christian Center was deliberate. My respect for the love Zachery Tims had for his members and their love for him compelled me to wait. Hence this article in no way questions their love for their pastor nor the positive impact that he had upon their walk with the Lord. With each passing day it has become evident that Zachery Tims had both fruit and fans. This word therefore is not to the good fruit of his life and ministry. To you, I extend my heartfelt sympathy and the prayer that the God of all comfort will abide with you as you make your journey through this valley of tears. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a fan (short for fanatic) is one marked by intense uncritical devotion. For any believer to be intensely uncritically devoted to a man is nothing short of idolatry. Who are these fans? They are the preachers who praise Zachery Tims’ good deeds while ridiculing those who merely access the damage incurred by his bad ones. They are the silly women so mesmerized by this good-looking charismatic preacher that they would vilify his ex-wife while deluding themselves into thinking they could have made him a better one. They are all of the lukewarm Christians who listened to Zachery Tims, but never heard a word – this word is for you. “Fruit or Fan of Zachery Tims?” is my updated response to a critic of my article, “Church, Stop The Cover-Up”. This critic engaged in name-calling and the pronouncement of ineffective curses upon my life because she had to, in her words, stand up for Zachery Tims. My reason for not using her name in my column is two-fold. One, her opinion of me is of no consequence and two, my response is not personal; it is business – my Father’s business.
Dear Fan of Zachery Tims:
It is my personal standard never to respond to contemptible comments such as yours. However, being led by the Holy Spirit I must respond. Your comments are indicative of the mindset of many people in the Body of Christ today who have no concept of holiness. Charisma and popularity trump humility and fidelity. Your lack of spiritual maturity, biblical knowledge and discernment was palpable.
Where were you when Zachery Tims was so unhappy? Where were you when he needed someone to make him accountable? Where were you when the demon of addiction had come back to haunt him? Where were you when he was cheating on his wife? Where were you when he boarded that plane to Paris? Where were you when he entered that stripper club sealing his fate? And where were you when he stepped foot out of that elevator on the 37th floor? Did you ever pray for his deliverance or were too caught up in the public persona of Zachery Tims to even perceive that he was bound?
Your vitriolic words are not the words of a Holy Ghost-filled believer who is grieving the lost of a man of God, but rather the rant of a fan that has lost an idol. Go tell his four children that God called their father home from a hotel room floor, alone with a glassine envelope on his person. Since you have not died and gone to heaven either, how do you know he is the reason thousands were saved? What evidence do you have? Did the Lord give you their names? I personally believe that the Lord used Zachery Tims to win countless souls (maybe thousands) to Christ, but that is what makes his death so painful and such a loss. How tragic it is to set the captives free and remain in bondage yourself. That is why the apostle Paul said, “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27).
I never claimed to know Zachery Tims’ destiny, but I do know that death and destruction is no believer’s destiny. Jesus came that we might have life and life more abundantly (John 10:10). If you do not believe that Zachery Tims had more to give this world then you did not know his destiny either. You called my article drama which is defined as “a composition in verse or prose intended to portray life”. So by definition I must agree. But don’t get it twisted. This is drama of the divine kind. God has issued me an irrevocable mandate and the world ain’t heard nothing yet! So do not waste your prayers asking God to silence someone to whom He has handed the microphone. I’ve got a Word from the Lord for you and every carnal-minded backslidden believer and preacher, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17). Judgment has already begun in the House of God.
The legacy of Zachery Tims does not need your venomous defense. His fruit that has remained will speak for him. Since I was not present when Zachery Tims drew his last breath, I will not proclaim as others have that he is lost for eternity. At the age of 42, I choose to believe that Zachery cried out like the thief in the 42nd verse of Luke 23, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom…” If Zachery cried, then Jesus answered, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). That is my prayer. That is my hope.
If the words from God’s Mouth to my pen will cause one preacher or believer to repent and be restored it will be worth every criticism. I am committed to writing the Truth of God’s Word until the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ (Revelation 11:15). Diverse opinions do not intimidate me so if you can share your thoughts without being verbally abusive I will be more than happy to post them. I assure you, I am more than equipped to stand my ground. And please, should I backslide tomorrow, as a brother or sister in Christ, do not stand by and let the devil kill me. Please do not just gossip about me while I disqualify myself from the race. Pray for me, get in my business and if you love me, get in my face! Snatch me up and remind me that the rules do NOT change because I am called and gifted. As my mama and the old saints would say, “Holiness is still right.”
