Waking up early Saturday morning I just had a feeling that today would be a special day. How so? Well I had the whole day to just watch college football and then drink beer later on at the Funky Buddha for their 1 year anniversary party. I’ll spare everyone the boring college football details because frankly nothing really exciting happened. My plan was to drink beers at the Funky Buddha and then try to catch the UF game at 7pm, but little did I know I was in for a longer night then initially planned.
The doors to the Funky Buddha were set to open at 5pm for the imperial snifter members and 6pm for the general public. I grew tired of watching a meaningless Big Ten game and cruised down to the Funky Buddha to get there a little early and to possibly chit chat with Ryan Sentz, the owner of the Funky Buddha. I arrived around 4:45pm after driving through a torrential downpour and found out that I was the very first member to arrive. I suppose it’s always been in my nature to arrive earlier then expected. I took a look at the tap list and decided which beers to tackle first. I narrowed it down to three choices : Raspberry Berliner, Brandy Barrel Piiti Porter and Pina Colada Wheat. My plan of attack has always been to dive into the unknown, or the beers I’ve never tried first. Well I waited patiently for about 15 minutes for the official start time of the event then went straight into drinking mode. The Raspberry Berliner was simply amazing. Ruby red color with an amazing aroma of sour fruit and tart flavors. The tartness really makes the jaw tingle and the tongue salivate.
The Pina Colada Wheat was very tasty as well. When the Funky Buddha says Pina Colada they mean it. This was less of a beer and more of a tropical experience. The pineapple flavor really shines in this one. At one point I handed the glass to my brother’s fiance and asked her to tell me what she thought. Her first words were “That’s pina colada all the way”. It’s always nice to hear a “non beer person” have nothing but kind words to say about a good craft beer.
I spent the next few hours chit chatting with beer buddies on what they thought about the beers that night and we were all in agreement that the Funky Buddha hit another one out of the park. However the night wasn’t over yet and we were still awaiting the Bourbon Aged Wide Awake It’s Morning. When it was finally put on tap around 9pm most of us were a little tired and beat from the days events, but no one was gonna miss this for the world. Needless to say it was well worth the wait. Dark creamy pour with all the aromas and flavors I’d come to love from the Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. It’s like walking into an IHOP restaurant and taking in all the maple bacon flavors. A beer I could most certainly drink all day, if I drank all day.
All in all it was a great event with a ton of great beer and great friends. I can’t wait for next year’s anniversary party and all the great beers Funky Buddha will be brewing in the future. Cheers!
