Continuing our series on “The American Dream”, we should remember that the history of the United States has been shaped by immigrants, starting with immigrants from England. For those of us born and raised here, it is too easy to forget that “The American Dream” can be a powerful force for immigrants even today.
A delightful case in point is the story of Gavin Holmes, an Englishman whose life journey drew him to America because of the importance of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in his current life’s work. He now lives in Chicago with his lovely wife Laura and their two beautiful children; and in addition, he has incorporated his own brother, Darren, into the burgeoning international business.
Gavin began his professional life as a police officer in England. He then shifted gears to enter the business world – starting as a jeweler, and then moving into the position as sales director for a London company engaged in the exhibition/events industry. This inspired him to start a business of his own in 1998 – designing and building exhibition stands for customers around the world.
It was within the context of this period of Gavin’s life that he encountered Tom Williams in London during May of 2001. Mr. Williams is an Englishman whose success in equity trading for an investment firm in California during the 1970’s and 80’s brought him wealth sufficient to enable his retirement at the age of 40. During retirement, Williams wrote two books about his trading expertise – The Undeclared Secrets That Drive the Stock Market and Master the Markets.
The genius of Williams’ books was based on the development of a computer program he built upon the principles taught by Richard D. Wyckoff early in 20th Century. Williams called his trading program “Wyckoff Volume Spread Analysis” (VSA). Williams unfolded his theories and methodology to Gavin- and to his discovery; Gavin found the outcome startlingly accurate as he thoroughly tested and retested the VSA trade signals.
Since that time, Gavin has taken this groundbreaking work and enhanced, enlarged, and elaborated upon it, creating a company with his business partner, Richard Bednall. The company is called TradeGuider Systems International, LLC. Together, they have developed an impressive and user-friendly line of trading products – from indicators for trading platforms to books, videos, and online “trading rooms” (within which traders watch and interact with a professional trader using VSA). In addition, Gavin’s amazing energy and affinity for work and interaction with other people lead him to make countless appearances through webinars, produce YOUTUBE trading videos, and lecture all over the world. In fact, TradeGuider’s VSA methodology is taught in over 40 countries.
At the root of Volume Spread Analysis is a revolutionary way of reading price charts, thereby understanding the interrelationship among three variables: 1) the volume, 2) the price and 3) the range/spread of a price bar. By interpreting price activity in this way, a trader steeped in VSA can identify the activity of “smart money” and then proceed to trade in the direction of the professionals.
Yes, in this way, Gavin can empirically prove what traders throughout history have suspected, and legal authorities have only occasionally vindicated – that the markets are “manipulated” by banks, hedge funds, and highly capitalized professionals. He naturally (and playfully) utilizes the fame of another holder of his last name by calling his weekly appearance through a broker online webinar: “Detective Holmes Follows the Smart Money”.
There is no doubt that this Englishman has captured the essence of the “American Dream”—making a living doing what you love to do, doing it passionately, and loving every moment of it, as well as loving the family and friends who are essential to any fulfilled life.
