Barbara Mikulski is the senior United States Senator from Maryland and a member of the Democratic Party She’s the 1st woman elected to the Senate from Maryland, is the longest-serving female senator, and the 2nd longest-serving female member in the history of the United States Congress. If she stays in office until March 17, 2012, she will become the longest-serving female member in the history of the United States Congress. And, Mikulski is a lifetime member of one of the most prestigious groups in America. If you guessed the U.S. Congress, well – you’d be close – but the organization we’re talking about is the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). And GSUSA today joined the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland (GSCM) in honoring Mikulski for her commitment to the Girl Scouts, notably her support for the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) and Girl Scouts in Detention Centers (GSDC) programs.
Additionally, the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland will jumpstart their celebration of the Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary.
“I loved being a Girl Scout,” Senator Mikulski said. “We were taught that we could do anything and be anything. We learned values and attitudes that serve as good guides throughout life. We learned how to use a compass, and that gave us a compass for life. I am so proud to be honored by the organization that has given so much to me and to girls across America.”
Also attending s special even this evening on behalf of Girl Scouts of the USA is Chair of the National Board of Directors, Connie L. Lindsey.
“Girl Scouts is highly dedicated to serving some of our most vulnerable and at-risk girls — the daughters of incarcerated parents, girls in the juvenile justice system, girls in public housing,” said Lindsey. “These girls could so easily fall through the cracks, but with the help of Senator Mikulski, Girl Scouts is able to serve these girls at a very difficult juncture in their lives and make a true difference.”
