Earlier this year this Examiner put together a wish list of gluten-free products we would like to see hit grocery store shelves. Some of the items have been developed and will come out at the end of this year, or early next year. There are also some items this Examiner didn’t have on her list that have been introduced and some items we are still waiting on.
It seems only appropriate as we are drawing to the end of 2012 to recap some of the first-to-market gluten-free products that have hit or are about to hit store shelves this year.
Here are some of my wish list products that are set to hit store shelves:
- Hot Pockets – Glutenfreeda introduced gluten-free hot pockets this year and what a warm welcome they received. There are currently three flavors of pizza wraps: Italian Sausage, Three Cheese and Pesto Chicken. All three of these wraps contain dairy, but the company is still looking for that perfect cheese substitute.
- Vanilla/Nilla Wafers – Home Free has developed a vegan mini vanilla cookie that tastes just like a vanilla wafer to me. Check out my review to learn more.
- Egg Rolls – Feel Good Foods is introducing three flavors of frozen eggs rolls: chicken, shrimp and vegetable by the end of this year. This company was the first to introduce gluten-free dumplings earlier this year, so we are thrilled with the progression of their product line and can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
These products should have been on my wish list:
- Bagel Chips – Glutino has introduced gluten-free bagel chips in two flavors: Original and Parmesan and Garlic. This Examiner can’t wait to make a batch of gluten-free Chex Mix using these bagel chips, but they also work great crumbled up in soup and salads, topped with chicken, egg or tuna salad and right out of the box.
- Instant Macaroni and Cheese – Pastariso has created instant macaroni and cheese that is perpared in a microwave safe cup. It is perfect for travel, lunch on the go and for snacks.
- Mozzarella Sticks – Health is Wealth introduced breaded mozzarella sticks that can be heated in the oven or in the microwave. More details on the product can be found in my review.
- Ravioli (Fresh) – Pasta Prima introduced two flavors of fresh, refrigerated gluten-free ravioli: Five Cheese and Butternut Squash that can be purchased at Wholesale Clubs. Their line of gluten-free ravioli is certified gluten free by the Gluten Free Certification Organization, which is a program of the Gluten Intolerance Group. The ravioli is made with a combination of corn and rice flour. More details on the ravioli can be found in my review.
- Rye Bread – Canyon Bakehouse has introduced Colorado Caraway bread. This Examiner was fortunate enough to receive a loaf for review and has been very impressed with its hearty texture and robust flavor. The bread is a combination of caraway seed and a unique sourdough starter that combine to create the traditional rye bread flavor. This new bread can currently be purchased on their website, but should be in stores soon.
- Toaster Pastries – Eco-Planet – has created a line of gluten-free frosted Toaster Pastries in three flavors: Brown Sugar and Cinnamon, Blueberry and Strawberry. This Examiner got to try the Brown Sugar flavor and didn’t find them to be overly sweet.

- Pop and Bake – biscuits, crescent rolls and cinnamon rolls
- Pot Pie
- Puff Pastry
- Quiche with a Crust
- Pastry Shells
- Sourdough Bread – this Examiner found a company making fabulous gluten-free sourdough bread, but they have yet to go into formal production.
- Canned Spaghetti /Ravioli – this Examiner grew up on SpaghettiOs and Ravioli and would love to see a company take on the challenge. Orgran makes canned spaghetti, but it is not my favorite.
What gluten-free product would you like to see made?
