It’s hard to beleive that Governor’s has been around for more than 30 years! The menu is always interesting, but the decor itself never really seems to change, which adds so much to it’s charm. In both Moline and Bettendorf, there’s no better place to pass a cold winter evening with friends or cheer on your favorite team with other fans. And while it will probably never be a bargain restaurant for the Under $10 Diner, there’s plenty of items on the menu that are a little less than that amount, and the food is very good.
Gov’s hits all the high notes on their menu, just what’s expected in a place like this, and done well. There’s a large variety of appetizers from nachos to mozzrella sticks to fried pickles. The prices run from $4.29 to $11.99, and a meal could be made out of any of them. The onion rings, ordered on this visit, were excellent – sweet, crispy, and definitely on the Top 10 List for good onion rings. There’s an equally large section of soups and salads, all $8.49 and less – the seasoned chicken salad is probably going to be ordered next time, if it’s possible to narrow my choice down. Gov’s is also known for their hamburgers, justifiably so, and the Bacon Cheeseburger ordered this time was very good. You can chose between a 1/4# and 1/2# burger, which is a great idea and rarely seen in the QCA. Not everyone wants to eat a 1/2# of beef! And then there’s the sandwiches and specialties – you’ll have a hard time picking just one thing from here. This time, the Raspberry Chicken Spinach Wrap was ordered, and it was very good. The sauce that came with it, a raspberry vinegrette, was perfect. The thrid item ordered was the catfish platter. I never would have thought of ordering a fish meal at a place like Governor’s, and it was a nice surprise when it was judged as very good. Who’d guess!!
Along with these meals, you get a choice of sides, a few of them very small servings indeed. But the french fries and the cole slaw are fine, especially the cole slaw, creamy and sweet.
There’s all kinds of free items here at Governor’s, and specials, too. On Wednesday night, you can buy one appetizer and get a second for 1/2 price, a great deal for the Under $10 Diner. On Monday and Sunday, come in for the Burger basket and fries for $3.95, and on Tues, there’s taco salad for $5.49, and free chips and salsa from 4 – 8 PM. There’s a lunch club – buy 8 lunches and get the 9th free. And as soon as you’ve found a place to sit, head for the popcorn machine and load up popcorn and peanuts in the shell. On Friday nights, 5 – 9Pm November through April, they have what’s called the Old Fashioned Wisconsin Fish Fry, all you can eat, for $8.99. And who knows what else they’ll have thought up by the time you get there.
Gov’s is located in Moline and Bettendorf – give them a try.
