When Green Day’s American Idiot hit Broadway in 2010, the musical based on the breakthrough concept album was a hot seller. American Idiot won two 2010 Tony Awards: Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Christine Jones, and Best Lighting Design of a Musical for Kevin Adams. It also received a nomination for Best Musical and then won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2011.

Broadway In Detroit announced today that single tickets for the Detroit engagement of the national tour of American Idiot will go on sale today, Wednesday, September 28 at10:00 a.m. at the Fisher Theatre box office, all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at 1-800-982-2787, and online at www.ticketmaster.com or the Broadway in Detroit website.
American Idiot features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. The book is by Armstrong and Michael Mayer, who also directs; Mayer is the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening.
American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. Through incredible spectacle, thrilling performances and Green Day’s music, American Idiot has brought the Broadway experience to a new generation of theatre goers. Now, thanks to the Broadway in Detroit series, the full experience is coming to Detroit via a national tour.
‘Since its inception, audiences have been surprised by the emotional journey the show takes them on, told almost exclusively through Green Day’s songs, including many they are already familiar with and love,’ said Tom Hulce, producer. ‘This is such a potent time for our country and the search of our characters for what to believe in is gorgeously celebrated through Billie Joe and Green Day’s wonderfully lush score,’ he added.
The musical features the hits ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams,’ ‘21 Guns,’ ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends,’ ‘Holiday’ and the blockbuster title track ‘American Idiot’ from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album. Also included in the score are several songs from Green Day’s 2009 release ‘21st Century Breakdown,’ and an unreleased love song, ‘When It’s Time.’
Performance times for American Idiot, appearing Jan. 17 – 22, 2012 at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway St., in Detroit, are: Tuesday through Saturday performances at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday evening performancesat 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.
