Gypsy Jule is a casual eclectic boutique in downtown Raleigh on North West Street. The owner Julie Sezer opened her original store in Cary, but was eager to expand her client base and clothing styles. The store is decorated in the warm feeling of Sundance to be in tune with the merchandise carried – boho chic with the flair of a free spirited woman. Julie has done a wonderful job using the interior store aesthetics, an old and exposed brick interior, to showcase her wares.
Although Julie carries clothing for women from 30-50 years old that prefer an updated style, she does not consider her store trendy. Trendy, not so much, but a nice mixture of denim, tops, dresses, boots, jewelry, and a few things for the house that are warm and cozy, like candles and throws. Julie continues to carry one of the best selections of Weston Wear in the South, which is a great clothing option for business casual to everyday fashion. Along with Weston Wear, Gypsy Jule carries Page and Red Engine jeans, Frenzi (a dress and top line), and Green Dragon, a fashion line with a distinct style and made in the USA. Julie prides herself on looking for lines that are made in the USA.
One of the best things about boutique shopping is the sense of adventure. For the average customer, it is a lesson most felt in boutiques like Gypsy Jule. If you want an item, buy it then, as it more than likely won’t be there a week later. Boutiques are for shoppers that want items not seen at most larger stores. For the average woman who likes easy dressing with a look that is not structured and coifed from head to toe, then this is the store for you. How refreshing to know that you can find a great piece to easily add unique and eclectic pieces with what you may already have in your wardrobe.
Also, expect to see one of the hot trends for fall at Gypsy Jule, which is colored jeans by Red Engine in red, turquoise, and plum. The great thing about colored jeans is the versatility of taking a jean from day to night, especially when accessorized differently. Learning to pair a colored jeans or corduroy’s with tees, an interesting jacket, and pair of UGG’s is not necessarily boho chic, but certainly a look for a relaxed, confident woman! Gypsy Jule will continue to push the envelope by carrying UGG’s trendier shoe and boot styles. Finish off your looks with jewelry from featured jewelry designers that Julie continues to support and highlight within the store.
Downtown Raleigh continues to flourish with mom and pop restaurants but has somewhat struggled to make that leap with retail clothing merchants. The question of where the best place to cluster clothing stores continues to be a subject of discussion. For merchants like Julie, it is an opportunity to be part of the resurgence of the downtown local community and cultivate a younger shopper from surrounding colleges, as well clients who enjoy traveling beyond their back door. At Gypsy Jule you are apt to find hidden treasures and warm customer service beyond the mall. In our current economy it is a bold move to join downtown merchants and promote shopping locally, where many other merchants instead choose to move to established shopping centers, malls or close up shop.
Come downtown for the First Friday of every month – it’s a great way to support local merchants in Downtown Raleigh along with keeping up with what’s happening that’ss new and exciting. In the meantime, don’t forget to stop by Ornamentea after Gypsy Jule. Ornamentea is right across the street and you can make a great necklace to go with your outfit. When you’re done, ride up West Street and belly up to the bar at 42nd Street Oyster Bar to throw back a cold one.
Let’s keep the local support coming and tell Julie the examiner sent you!
