Fall is always a fun and exciting time of year and it’s extremely important that when attending all the hottest Halloween parties, you look your absolute best!
Now we all know Colorado weather. It’s obnoxious. Some Halloweens are beautiful and perfect, others are freezing and terrible. So if you’ve lived here your whole life you know that this is an important factor in costume execution. If you havn’t, heed the warning, especially if you’re going to be taking kids out for trick or treating.
When choosing a costume think about it like you would think about dressing for a date. You want to wear somthing that will attract the type of person you want. (If you want a little more on this subject check out Ways to Meet People) If you’re looking for a cute gamer boy go as an awesome Princess Peach. If you’re looking for a preppy athlete dress as a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader. Get the idea? Below I’ve got some great ones that cater to the best men in the world, plus ways to make them appropraite for whatever the Colorado weather will throw at us.
Intellectual Boy: Think creative and artistic. You could go as Mona Lisa, Holly Golightly, or become a living representation of an Andy Warhol piece. The important thing here is your creativity and execution. Your costume has to look spot on while still seeming effortless. Like for the Mona Lisa, a long sleeved black dress, a wig, do your makeup, carry a picture frame. For Holly, cute knee length black dress, black hat, sunglasses, and a cigarette holder. For the Warhol dress edgy with odd color combinations then do your make up crazy, like blue eyeshadow, purple lipstick, and make your face really pail.
To make any of these weather appropriate make sure your base isn’t too hot or complicated to wear. Then to layer think what will either enhance or take away from the costume. The warhol add a jacket to your edgy outfit, easy. For Mona, a black, form fitting, jacket (wear pants under the dress if it’s really cold) For Holly think about what she would, or did wear, as a jacket and add it, (wear thick tights if it’s really really cold). For specific people, think about the time period, what would this character logically wear. For iconic images what kind of over lay can you add that doesn’t detract from it (like the mona Lisa).
Pretty, Athletic Boy: This one can be really fun and creative. Remeber though, it’s still very important to make this costume simple yet excellent. Concise. Think about the main elements that make it and you’re costume is party ready. If you have the body for it dress as a cheerleader, (keep it close to what they really wear, don’t be slutty). If you’re self concious or full figured (like me!) you could go as a classic baseball player or football player, making the costume look vintage is key there. You could also go as something funny like a foam hand or “fan” of a certain team. Again keep it simple and clear.
Like above, think logically how you can keep warm with a costume. For these ones it’s going to be using things under the iconic images (like under armor) that will maintain integrity and keep the look. The foam hand would be good because you could wear all the color of whatever foam hand you choose and just keep layering to make yourself bigger, even add a layer of foam (if easily available).
Cute, but Geeky: Here’s my specialty. Here’s where you just need to dress as an iconic character, like Princess Peach, Daisy, Ivy, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, ect. Now the important part here is to avoid store bought!!! Actually, for everything. DO NOT buy costumes in a bag. That’s too easy. Any costume can simply be made with things from everyday stores if you hunt for them. Use costume stores for accessories only. Other options are to go as anything you would wear to the Renaissance Fair or more obscure game references. A fun one could be to be a Katamari ball of stuff. Get a black moo moo and just adhear random toys and objects to it like cows and fences and lego people! For geeky boys taking time and being a more complex character/costume is fine. They appreciate the effort, other guys just care if you look good, are mildly entertaining, and not something they’ve seen a million times.
To warm up, compile all techniques mentioned above, for anything skin tight, dress like, ect. to keep the iconic image you have to layer underneath unless you can layer on top keeping the colors and look the same.
Well ladies happy haunting! (ha ha get it. hunting, haunting. I felt that needed to be explained)
