Do you know what lurks in the dark of the night? Try ghosts, ghouls and a few mischievous goblins. They spend their evenings slamming doors, turning rooms from blazing hot to icy cold, whispering sweet nothings into the open air and appearing in windows and mirrors. Blood-curdling screams are their specialty. If there’s a house to haunt or an unsuspecting traveler to spook, they’re on it.
This time of year is especially ripe with paranormal activity and other supernatural occurrences. Halloween is almost here and it brings out the creatures of the night for a once-a-year screamfest. So, instead of the usual tricks or treats, try visiting a few cities known for their spooky history and haunted inns. Be prepared for a scary good time.
New Orleans, LA, is a supernatural jambalaya – it’s not called “America’s Most Haunted City” for nothing. Creatures of all kinds call this city home. It may have something to do with its coastal location, rich history of old and new religions and dark, storied past. Feel like hunting ghosts or exploring cryptic tombs? You can sign up for the “Bloody Mary Cemetery Tour.” If visiting infamous crime scenes is more to your liking, try the “French Quarter Phantoms Ghost Tour.” Downtown Charleston, SC, also known as the Battery, was the location of numerous protective artillery storages during the Civil War and, according to those who live there and have visited, some soldiers remain. You can meet one or two on the “Historic Battery Tour” or take the “House & History Tour” and visit them in the comforts of their old homes.
“Beyond Bizarre” doesn’t only describe the unexplained occurrences in the city of Portland, OR; it’s also the name of a popular ghost-hunting tour. You’ll pack up some ghost hunting equipment (and your courage, of course) and join certified members of the International Ghost Hunters Society on a search for one of the 1888 Merchant Hotel’s long-term guests named “Nina” along with other ghouls. Get ready of a night that will make your spine tingle.
Haunted cities make creepy playgrounds for supernatural seekers. Ghosts can be found drifting down hallways and through the walls of Victorian inns and historic hotels and floating around seaports and graveyards waiting for their next thrill. So why not double your trouble and book a haunted B&B to stay in while you’re there? The ghosts will be happy to see you even though you can’t see them!
