Okay, truthfully this Examiner was not looking forward to watching ‘Hart of Dixie’ which premiered this week on the CW (channel 2 in Colorado Springs). Unfortunately, the previews did not do the show justice. It was far better than expected (if you don’t agree you are welcome to your opinion, leave the comment below). The show touched my cynical heart just a little and two days later had me thinking of it… a sign of a good show indeed.
There really was no real hook, a big city doctor with dreams of becoming a surgeon like her ‘father’ was told she needed to find a way to look at her patients like people, not problems she needed to fix. It didn’t sit well with her, but like a trooper she took the feedback and reached out to the only person who seemed to have faith in her since the beginning of her medical career. He asked her at her graduation if she would come work with him as a GP in his small town practice. Already having her mind made up she turned him down, but he was persistent and kept sending postcards with the invite every year.
Years later, having no choice, she decided to join him (unfortunately he had passed away a few months before) but because of his ‘special’ relationship to her (we find out later in the episode he was her actual father) he left his half of his practice to her. Now she finds herself in a practice with a man who really can’t wait to get rid of her, interested in a man who is engaged to be married to the daughter of her partner, and wrapped up in small town drama (that is just as, or perhaps more intense than big city drama).
She went through a gamat of emotions in the premiere, which was a ride most of us went along on too. In the end (there wouldn’t be a show if it had happened any other way) she decided to stay in the small town and carry on her father’s work… for the time being.
The first impression of this show is it is a heart warming, delectable tale of a young girl searching for what is important in life after being on (perhaps) the wrong trail since she was nine. Will she fit in with the locals, probably not, but she will make the friends needed to make it work and will shake up the rest of the town in the process. Check out the preview to the left for a hint of what is to come next week.
