With Halloween right around the corner and all the haunted stories and places in Wichita Falls at our disposals, it was only fitting to bring these places to light once again. There are many places in the Wichita Falls and Surrounding areas that have tales and stories of hauntings. Many countless Friday and Saturday Nights the majority of us in Wichita Falls as teenagers would load up in the car with friends and set out to go get spooked! Around Wichita Falls, any local will tell you exactly what to look for if mysterious and eerie is the topic of conversation. The following few places are local legends and what used to be local favorites!
This used to be one of the creepiest and most electrifying places to visit in Wichita Falls. Before its transformation to a remodeled and well-kept complex, this spot was the old Insane Asylum. The building was located at the corner of California and Olen Street. Opened in 1926, by Frank White; the White Sanitarium ran for years until eventually it was damaged by flooding. White Sanitarium was a place where many of us knew by heart. Everyone has heard stories and they range from seeing a woman with long white hair roam the place to screams and yells being reported all the way at the other end of the street. Each of us have our own stories in remembering the times when it was once that old white building on the corner of that long road, and in the middle of nowhere!
This location rings a bell for most of the older population in Wichita Falls. Chances are if you were a teenager in the 1980’s and prior, you have many stories to tell about this particular spot! Located on Ardath Street, this ditch is what locals call Pinky’s Cave. It is a three mile long ditch where local boys would hangout and eventually became the stuff of legend! There are many stories tied with this place. Countless people have made the walk all the way through and report strange things along the way. A woman died here which is what made this place the hotbed for tales and folklore as it is to this day. Not very many come to this location now, as it has become a hangout for all kinds of mischievous happenings related to gangs, and so forth but to most everyone in Wichita Falls, when the name “Pinky’s Cave” is mentioned everyone knows exactly what it is and how to get there!
Between Wichita Falls and Henrietta is where you would find Witches Gate. Going through many articles, it’s easy to find information about the history of this place. Two older men who were brothers; Jim and Kenneth Keith, had lived in this place. In the summer of 1975, Kenneth heard voices, and then a gunshot coming from Jim’s room and as he walked in he found his brother shot in the back. He then was tied as the intruders wanted money and upon opening the safe, Kenneth Keith was released. There were four men arrested in connection to the incident. To make a very long and interesting story short with all of this, in February of 1976 the place was torched. There are tales of both the brothers still haunting this location. There were even sightings of this building being once again on fire when looking upon it from a distance. One thing is certain with Witches Gate, it is a place where most any Wichitan knows about, has visited, and everyone will tell you a story of being there and doing their own personal investigations!
