This weekend was a big weekend for several former Iowa football players competing in the National Football League.
Former Hawkeye linebacker Pat Angerer continued to shine for the Colts and former Iowa running back Shonn Greene scored a TD, but no one was bigger for their team this week than former Iowa punter Ryan Donahue.
Donahue had a big task on Monday Night Football — keep the ball away from Chicago Bears punt returner Devin Hester. Mission accomplished for the former all-Big Ten performer.
Donahue only averaged 32.4 yards per punt but three of his five kicks were downed inside the 20-yard line and Hester only returned one of them for one yard. The former Iowa punter is a big part of the Lions’ surge to the top of the NFL standings, and his success going forward will continue to play a big role.
In other games this weekend, a few former Iowa linebackers and former defensive back made big impacts.
Angerer was once again dominant at middle linebacker as he had 15 tackles — four of which were solos — in the Colts’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Joining him on the roster this year is A.J. Edds, who made his first tackle with the team this weekend.
Another former Hawkeye had the worst game of his strong NFL career for Indianapolis on Sunday. Dallas Clark had just one catch for seven yards but also dropped three passes in the loss. He has struggled to be productive without quarterback Peyton Manning in the lineup.
Chad Greenway led the Minnesota Vikings in tackles this weekend with nine solo tackles and he also had one pass defensed. Another former Hawkeye who led his team in tackles was Carolina safety Charles Godfrey, who had nine solo tackles and two pass defensed on Sunday.
Greene had his best game of the season Sunday for the New York Jets in a loss against New England. Greene carried the rock 21 times and gained 83 yards and scored a TD. He also had two catches for nine yards as the Jets will look to move forward with a strong emphasis on the running game.
Here is a rundown of how some other former Iowa Hawkeyes fared this weekend in the National Football League.
Scott Chandler — 1 catch for four yards in the Buffalo Bills’ win over Philadelphia.
Tyler Sash — Two tackles for the New York Giants in their loss to Seattle.
Adrian Clayborn — Two tackles for the Tampa Bay Bucs in a big loss at San Francisco.
Amari Spievey — Did not play for the Lions as he sat out with an injury.
Christian Ballard — 1 tackle for the Vikings in their first win of the season.
