Not long ago, 7 tiny kittens inside of a box were apparently thrown onto a dirt road; tossed away like garbage. They were only 3 to 4 weeks old when they were found in the middle of that road in Holton in Muskegon County, MI on old Skeels Road August 16th.
We hear these stories far too often about heartless humans who neglect to spay/neuter their companion animals and end up with unwanted babies, or those who simply don’t want to be bothered with their animals any longer. Not wanting to have to come up excuses for taking these poor animals to a shelter or simply because they can’t be bothered, they throw them out of a car.
Little Adlai Grace (Adlai is Hebrew for “God is just”) was one of the tiny kittens thrown away. She appeared to have suffered a terrible spinal injury that left her with lower body paralysis and incontinence. She was found with her littermates; some dead, some dying and in desperate need of help. Most of the kittens didn’t survive.
This terribly-wounded little kitten needed a lot of help and she found that help from Wendy Michelle Matthews, who took in this precious baby and did everything she could to save her. She created a Facebook page, trying to raise the funds for the expensive medical care needed and another Facebook page to find the heartless monsters who had done this to Adlai Grace and her siblings. Adlai Grace had many devoted advocates following her story, and her page was updated with her progress.
Sadly, Adlai Grace kept having odd spells that were assumed to be from the pain of her injuries. It was shocking to find out after further examinations and tests were done, that Adlai was most likely hurt even before being thrown from that car, since her injuries were simply too severe. It was either that, or when she was thrown out her tiny body had somehow crashed into a pole or a tree. Nobody will ever know.
Wendy gave Adlai Grace a life that was full of the tenderness and love this precious baby deserved. Wendy showed her that not all humans wanted to hurt her. But sadly, sometimes all the love and kindness in the world just isn’t enough.
Little Adlai Grace died suddenly on October 12th during one of her spells. She died cradled in Wendy’s arms. At least at the end, Adlai Grace knew the most special kind of love, and one has to believe she could feel all of the love that was being sent to her through the thoughts and prayers of the people from around the world who checked on her progress every day.
Wendy and her supporters now want to focus on finding the heartless people who did this to Adlai Grace and her siblings. Someone had to have seen this horrible act of cruelty, or know the people who had the kittens and possibly bragged about “getting rid” of them. Adlai Grace’s cruel fate should not go unpunished, and she deserves justice for this terrible crime. Help is also needed to pay for the very extensive medical treatment that Adlai Grace required during her short life.
If you know of anyone who has any information about this, please send an email at the link below.
There is also a Chip-In that was set up to help pay for the cost of all of Adlai Grace’s medical expenses. If you’d like to donate to help with that, the link is given below as well.
Rest in peace sweet Adlai Grace, and know that your life truly mattered.
