It may seem that Henry Simmons is too much of a man’s men for the rest of the, well, men-children on the new ABC comedy, Man Up! but even if that is true, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for him in their little group. In fact, for all intents and purposes the very differences that seem to exist on the surface may be what attracts the other guys to him in the first place: he can offer a fresh perspective. And once they really get to know him, Simmons shared, they will find they really do have a lot of things in common. He may be the voice of reason at times, but he’s quirky nonetheless! So audiences can look forward to Simmons sticking around for the long haul and embracing the comedy dynamic in a brand new way.
“It was a surprise to me because I didn’t know– I thought Grant was going to come and kind of be an outsider. But almost immediately, gradually we start bringing him in. And the episodes that we’re shooting now it’s no longer just the three guys getting involved in crazy, wild things; it’s the four of us. I’m so excited about that!” Simmons said when LA TV Insider Examiner had a chance to catch up with him on the phone earlier this month.
“There is a totally different element to the rest of the guys. He’s the voice of reason. I mean, you saw the first episode, but in the episodes after that, you’ll see more. He’s a very strange, quirky kind of guy, and it’s a totally different element, so it works,” he continued. “The thing that makes him different, it seems like the other guys have grown up in this world, you know, in Ohio, in this small world that they’ve been in. [Grant] seems to be more worldly, I’d say. Every new episode I find ‘Oh, he did that? He did that?’ Everything; everything! And there’s a peace about him– a zen quality the other guys don’t quite have. So he gives this wisdom; he’s like the voice of wisdom at times.”
But more than that outsider perspective, Simmons loves that his guy is just so darn positive all of the time. Simmons believes he truly is genuine in his positivity and that he has love for everybody– even those who are a little cold to him in the beginning. Those like Kenny (Dan Fogler) who see his character of Grant as the ultimate competition: not only a bigger, taller, more handsome version of himself but also the guy who got the girl in the end. That’s a whole other element to the challenge of Grant truly being accepted as one of the guys.
“It’s almost like– I don’t know if there’s so much of a love triangle anymore, but there is a little bit of tension because Kenny, you know, as much as I’m part of the group with the guys, he likes me, but there’s kind of a love-hate kind of thing,” Simmons laughed.
Still, the other guys try to bring them together because, as Simmons put it, the show is really just about “these guys in crazy circumstances,” and he teased an upcoming story that sees Grant attempting to bond with Kenny over his favorite film: Star Wars.
“Kenny, Dan Fogler’s character, he’s really into video games and movies…and his favorite movie is Star Wars, and what Will is trying to do, because he says, you know, Kenny and Grant have to co-exist; they cant keep fighting all of the time, so he’s like ‘Hey, you know what? Grant’s never seen Star Wars, Kenny why don’t you introduce him to Star Wars.’ And without giving away too much, my character is involved when something happens to Kenny’s precious Star Wars.”
Simmons wouldn’t say exactly what– only that it’s something hilarious and definitely to be seen– but we confirmed it is not a light saber fight. That would be a little bit cliché anyway, right?
“He loves these guys, and he’ll do anything for them,” Simmons said. And a light saber fight might have jeopardized that, after all.
Man Up! airs on ABC on Tuesday nights at 8:30pm.
