Arthritis is a major public health problem here in Syracuse as it is across the nation. And arthritis is a leading cause of disability in Syracuse as it is across the United States. The New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, which has been taking action against arthritis for 60 years, has an Upstate New York Chapter which covers the Syracuse region.
Due to the pain and high cost of disability associated with arthritis coupled with the potential dangerous side affects from conventional drug treatment for arthritis sufferers here in Syracuse as elsewhere are always interested in safe natural herbal remedies to treat arthritis. ScienceDaily has reported “A Wise Man’s Treatment for Arthritis: Frankincense?”
A group of scientists claims that a good natural answer to treating painful arthritis could lie in an age old herbal remedy, frankincense. Dr Emma Blain and her research associates have noted that their research shows that the Somali community has traditionally used extracts of frankincense as a traditional herbal remedy for arthritic conditions. Dr Blain has said “The search for new ways of relieving the symptoms of inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is a long and difficult one. What our research has focused on is whether and how these extracts can help relieve the inflammation that causes the pain.”
These scientists believe they have demonstrated that treatment with an extract of Boswellia frereana, which is a rare frankincense species, inhibits the production of key inflammatory molecules which helps prevent the breakdown of the cartilage tissue which causes the arthritis. The researchers have said that the search for new drugs to safely alleviate the symptoms of conditions like inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is a priority area for them. Their research has succeeded in using innovative chemical extraction techniques to determine the active ingredient in frankincense.
