One of the much-anticipated holiday shopping events in Wichita opens tomorrow with an evening Preview Party–the 8th annual Holiday Galleria, sponsored by the Junior League of Wichita, at Century II Expo Hall, 225 W. Douglas.
“We’re a week earlier this year due to the availability at Century II,” said Aram Morvari, event promotions director for the Holiday Galleria. “Usually Galleria is the second weekend of October.”
General admission opens on Friday morning for the weekend during which the Expo Hall will be filled with 123 merchants and craftspeople with lots of great items for holiday giving or to buy for yourself. This is a great time to discover Wichita boutiques with which you aren’t familiar. Everything from home decor to custom baby items to jewelry and luxurious bath and spa goods can be found at the Holiday Galleria.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Junior League of Wichita and the work these 700 women do in the community. In the prvious seven years, the Galleria raised $654,000 to assist the Junior League in their mission of improving the quality of life in Wichita through support of programs and providing well trained volunteers to organizations.
For the coming year, the focus will be on supporting and working with organizations towards addressing the issue of child abuse. Since its founding, the Junior League has contributed $5.8 million to community projects in Wichita, many of them related to the welfare of chidren and helping young people succeed in life, and contributed $44 million in in-kind services and volunteer hours.
“The focus for our mission in the coming year will be on fighting child abuse in the community,” said Morvari.
For 2011-12, the Junior Leaguewill work with the Child Advocacy Center of Sedgwick County, which promotes the safety, health and emotional well-being of abused children and their caregivers. Junior League will contribute up to $24,000 and provide 15 volunteers. Also, Junior League will help the nonprofit Downtown Day Care Center combat childhood obesity with the Color Me Healthy curriculum. Junior League’s commitment will be up to $16,000 and 12 volunteers.
These are on top of existing projects and programs at the Fundamental Learning Center and Judge Riddel Boys Ranch.
