Season 7 of HIMYM continues to be full of funny episodes that also help move the story along. Episode 7, titled Noretta was all about how people usually end up dating those who remind them of their parents. Not the newest concept ever, but because the show does not mind leaving the edges of reality, it was produced in an original manner.
The story begins with the entire gang, Robins boyfriend Kevin (Kal Penn), Barney’s brother James (Wayne Brady) and his girlfriend Nora (Nazanin Boniadi) all trying to fit into the usual booth at MacLaren’s. This proves to be difficult forcing Nora to use “the loo” (British slang for restroom) only because she feels the need to sit alone. During this moment we find out that Barney believes he will finally have sex with Nora that evening. It comes to a shock to everyone that Barney is still waiting, but as he explains they have “decided to wait until she decides to have sex with me”. When Nora returns she lets Barney know her plans include Ice Skating, which disappoints him immediately, until she whispers in his ear that they will “shag” (More British slang) later.
Of course Barney screams in excitement and the couple dashes out the bar. James tells everyone else that Nora reminds him of their mother and we witness flashbacks of how similar the two really are. Luckily the gang has a new licensed therapist around in Kevin, who lets them know how normal it is to be attracted to a person who reminds you of your parents.
Lily and Marshall in the B story are already having trouble getting the spark back in the bedroom because of her pregnancy. After planning on an evening of romance they both realize that they remind each other of their fathers. It is very disturbing to see both their dads try and put the moves on them, but it all pays off when the two fathers almost kiss.
The third plot revolves around Ted being a constant third wheel in Robin and Kevin’s new relationships. Future Ted suggested in The Ducky Tie that his friendship with Robin would be changing soon, and this seems like the beginning of that. Kevin has a right to feel uncomfortable with Robin and Ted living together and being so close, and it finally forces him to explode when he witnesses his girlfriend give Ted a massage as he asks her to a Weird Al concert. Even though Kevin feels bad and eventually offers to hang out with Ted himself, the damage is there under the surface.
As those three deal with their issues we witness Barney and Nora have the worst date ever. Nora falls and breaks a tooth, has a rat on her head, and witnesses a man commit suicide. None of this will deter Barney who continues to announce that he can turn this around. When it does seem all is going well and Barney realizes himself that Nora does remind him of his mother. This is not a deal breaker because he feels his mother is one of the best people in the world.
Over all it was a nice episode with some good laughs, a lot of reoccurring characters, and some forward plot movement.
What I know my parents would have loved about this episode
- “Hand Central Station”
- When Kevin can no longer stand Ted’s neediness towards Robin he screams “Aww hell no, if you can take my girl on a date, I don’t have to wear pants in your apartment” and drops his trousers.
- Robin with another obscure Canada reference: “I’m not a Weird Al fan. He’s just a ripoff of Peculiar Jacques.”
- The split screen of Barney’s mom and Nora singing Julie Andrew’s “My Favorite Things” was classic HIMYM. I need to find that clip on youtube, just to watch Barney’s facial expressions again.
- Ted at the end always gets a girl. How long with this one last, probably not long at all.
- Weird Al really used Ted’s idea for “Like A Surgeon” and it went right to the top of the charts.
