How I Met Your Mother continued on CBS 2 in Queens Monday night with “Noretta.” Barney was excited for some romance, and everyone faced the fact that their significant other reminded them of one of their parents.
The booth was crowded at the bar with everyone in relationships and James visiting. Once Nora left for the bathroom, Barney spilled that they were having sex for the first time that night—she told him she had a special treat for him. However, when she returned, she said she meant ice-skating…then sex. Once they left, James confessed he didn’t like Nora because everything about her reminded him of their mother—and there was evidence. When the couple returned for Nora’s coast and kissed, James saw Barney with their mother. Kevin pointed out it’s normal to end up with someone like their parents.
Pregnant Lily couldn’t button her pants and declared sex off-limits, so Marshall had to come up with a way to make her feel sexy. Ice-skating didn’t go well for Nora, who knocked out her teeth, but Barney knew a “dentist” to fix it. Though she wanted to call it a night after that, he convinced her to go for a drink. That was when a rat jumped on her head.
When Ted complained about Kevin standing in his boxers in their living room, Robin talked to him, but found out he had a legitimate reason: he had spilled coffee on his pants when Ted walked by with his robe open. She told Kevin that Ted was going through a rough time and needed a break. Meanwhile, Marshall had come up with a risqué board game to help make Lily feel sexy, but she couldn’t help comparing him to someone else she knew who loved board games: Mickey, her father. Nora wanted to go home, but Barney talked her into going back to his place. After she took a bath, they took champagne onto the balcony—and a man fell past them, committing suicide.
Kevin and Robin invited Ted to join them in the living room during their date night, and he put in a documentary. Meanwhile, Lily kept seeing Mickey instead of Marshall while in a bubble bath as he tried to relax her. During the documentary, Kevin finally had enough when Robin gave Ted a backrub, and the roommates planned to go to a concert together. Marshall tried to tell Lily that she was nothing like his mother, but then he realized that she was just like his father.
Nora was the one convinced they could fix their night, but then Barney began comparing her to his mother. Marshall and Lily kept seeing their fathers while the couple was in bed and finally confessed why they had to stop. Lily wasn’t happy to find out she reminded him of his father.
Even Kevin was seeing his mother instead of Robin. He didn’t like that Ted had thought of Robin first to see the concert, but then Ted revealed that he had went through a long list of people before asking her to the Weird Al concert (he was a huge fan and even wrote letters with song ideas). Kevin realized just how fragile he really was, and Robin said she couldn’t go to the concert either. Kevin volunteered to go, saying he was a Weird Al fan.
Later at the bar, Barney showed up and said Nora’s a lot like his mother, but he still turned things around—literally, he “turned it around.” He pointed out his mother’s the best person he knows, and he was lucky if Nora was a little bit like her. Marshall and Lily left to go have their own fun, and Ted sent Kevin and Robin on their way. When he called out a Weird Al quote, a woman joined him as a fellow fan—and he saw his mother in her, but didn’t care.
