How I Met Your Mother continued its seventh season this week on CBS 2 in Queens, and Monday, September 26’s episode, “The Ducky Tie,” featured a bet for Barney and a run-in with an ex for Ted.
While Marshall was excited about his ducky tie, Barney had fun mocking it. However, Ted saying he ran into a girl from his past, leading to a long list of guessing, interrupted it. He saw Victoria at the Architects’ ball. The conversation was put on pause when everyone noticed Lily’s pregnancy breasts. They were also why they ended up going for hibachi for dinner, during which Ted told them about seeing Victoria, with some corrections from Robin. She said it was awkward, but she helped smooth things over—when she did the opposite. Victoria found it weird that Barney, Robin, and Ted all hang out. When Victoria went to leave, Ted had a speech to give about fate and wanted to make amends for what he did by washing dishes for her.
Meanwhile, when Barney made fun of their chef, he ended up in a bet with Marshall and Lily. Barney insisted he could do all the same tricks as the chef, and if he couldn’t, he’d have to wear Marshall’s ducky tie for a year. If he could, he got to touch Lily’s breasts. They returned to Ted’s run-in with Victoria; he found out she was getting married.
Barney hadn’t been drinking all night like Lily thought and had possibly attended a school to learn hibachi cooking. Back to Victoria, she explained that she found the ring in her boyfriend’s sock drawer and was probably going to become engaged the following night. Things got more suspicious as clues started coming together for Barney able to win the bet. He agreed to call the bet off if she let him just see her breasts. She said she’d think about it.
Once the dishes were done, Ted found out that her boyfriend, Klaus, was in her class in Germany and wondered if she cheated on him. She was single for a day and a half before they started dating. He was angry and thought their relationship meant more to him than her, but she said she loved him. She reminded him of the drumroll leading up to the kiss, but this time they did kiss.
Victoria took the blame and then said it was fate. She needed to make sure she was sure about Klaus and had a bus to catch. Back at hibachi, Lily agreed to let Barney see her breasts, but back in the alley, Marshall called a stop to it. He said this was Barney’s plan, and the bet was back on. Inside, Barney was doing quite well until he was distracted by Lily lifting her shirt and couldn’t do the shrimp in the pocket.
Ted took Victoria to her bus and told her not to go, something he should’ve done at the airport. He wondered what their life would be like if he had stopped her. She said goodbye and got on the bus. Back at MacLaren’s, the others comforted Ted and mocked Barney for the ducky tie.
However, Ted told his children he left out one part: Victoria told him Robin was the reason they didn’t work out and the reason none of his relationships have. Future Ted said she was right, that the three of them hanging out didn’t work, but they didn’t know it yet.
