If bullies were a matter of DNA, then Science would, eventually, give us the cure. The problem is that the “Culture of Corruption” has given birth to underage bullies, while their adult counterparts practice ‘plausible denial’ of responsibility.
“The child is father to the man,” because children learn what they live. Given the overwhelming evidence that bullying has insinuated itself into every aspect of our so-called, democratic way of life-from Congressional ultimatum:’vote-my-way-or-we-will-let-America-go-bankrupt, to ‘reality tv’, “Bad Girls,” to ‘Race to the Top’ Educational funding- the how, when and where to begin systematic eradication of bullying, at the school level, fills parents and teachers with a demoralized, defeated attitude, from ‘jump street.’ Until all stakeholders in a free, public education, accept the reality that our children have learned well what we have taught them, the Age of Bullies will soon replace the Age of Information.
So, what can seemingly, impotent parents do, at the school level?
Imagine you are walking a tightrope, because you are, and don’t look down there! There are bullies below!
Cultivate a ‘culture of communication’, with your child;
a) daily conversation of activities, events, or, incidents in school;
b) encourage your child’s friends to play/’hang-out,’ at your house, and get to know them;
c) read your child’s Facebook, blogs, etc., daily.
Engage any and all staff at your child’s school in a conversation of accountability.
Organize a grass-roots organization, like, say, F.A.B.! (Families Against Bullies); or,
Join Heart of Florida Peace Alliance, by emailing Shirley Curtis-Ference, of Lake Wales, at email@example.com.
Do not accept the school board’s and/or the principal’s ‘plausible denial’: “Alex did not complain of bullying.” (Consult a lawyer, as to you and your child’s rights & remedies at law.)
If he, or, any bullying victim, felt safe to ‘out the bully’, suicide would not be the option of choice, as it was for Polk County student, Alex Gonzalez, 14, of Lakeland Highlands Middle School who committed suicide on October 14, 2011.
If we didn’t exhault ‘bullyism’, as the penultimate “15 minutes of fame,” (Andy Warhole, circa 1965), “Girl Fight” would never have gone ‘viral’, on “reality video!” And these girls/bullies are home-grown-Lakeland, Polk County School District.
