There is no safety in being a freelance writer. There is no employer who will pay you a salary paycheck despite the amount of work to be completed. There is no guarantee for assignments and clients you have been working for may discharge you without any given notice.
It is a difficult industry to work in, but you have a long list of benefits. Not only can you set your own work schedule, but you can also write about your passion and expertise. At least once in your freelancing career, you will need to find new clients. Even if none of your clients let you go, you want to find challenges and pay rates that suit your level of work. You don’t want to stay at minimum wage forever, do you?
Ask Fellow Writers
Ask your fellow freelance writers for help. Many freelance writers get a taste of the industry, because they have worked for large content mills. Many of these writers get to know one another and often help out when in need. If you do ask these writers for help, make sure you ask the ones who are properly trained in writing. Do not ask those who are just freelancing as a hobby or those who just happened to fall into the role. These people are often uneducated about the ‘actual’ freelance industry outside of the given content mill and don’t know much about finding reliable clients and work assignments. Be selective – if you are not careful, you may not get the well-paying assignments.
Apply at Niche Blogs
Contact niche blogs or local magazines that focus on the top matter that is your given area of expertise. For example, contact National Geographic if you are a nature and travel writer. LIVESTRONG may be more suited for health and medical writers. However, niche blogs, such as Wetpaint and Hollywood Life stay current in the celebrities and entertainment world, so those who enjoy stalking celebrities all day on the internet should contact the highest-rated websites and magazines in this industry.
Marketing Published Work
Although you are looking for new clients, you should not undermine your existing published work. Articles that are well written and properly indexed by search engines will appear at the top of search results. Continue to perfect those articles, as you never know who is reading them. Several freelance writers have been contacted by companies or magazines based on already-published articles and gotten excellent assignments that pay well.
